HD500 with headphones

Hi all, first ever post on here....and I'm scared!! I have an HD500 coming tomorrow but I've just read a discusion about using it with headphones. Generally, people seem to be saying it sounds rubbish with headphones!! I was expecting it to sound awesome, having read and listened to loads of reviews. I've used a few multi effects units over the years with headphones and they've sounded ok. Is there something about Pod HD headphone outs that means they need a certain type of headphones? And is there a best output setting for headphones on the HD500?
Could someone out there put my mind at rest and assure me it's not gonna sound like wasps in a jam jar?? I'll be using Sennheiser HD 518 headphones...they sound pretty good to me with my old effects processer, and with music in general.
Thanks...
The most important thing about using the HD500 with headphones is to make sure the Output Mode is set to Studio Direct. Wasps in a jam jar thrive in headphones with the HD500 Output Mode set to one of the Live modes.
Rest easy............
I use headphones a lot and it sounds fantastic. The people who have struggled with headphones have mostly either had setup issues, or have tried using alt tunings with JTVs and their headphones did not provide good acoustic isolation.
Overall, you should be fine. And as per silverhead, Studio Direct output mode is your friend.
Funny, I just so happened to play my HD500 through headphones today and it sounded the same as
through every other permutation - total, absolute rubbish. I was pleasantly surprised, on the other hand, how decent my PodXT through a PowerEngine and my PodXT through my Atomic Reactor sounded.

Well, at least it's consistent for you : )
i think the hd500 sounds better than my XT and X3 in all output methods. i run it with the cab simulations using senheiser HD 280 pro headphones or through some m audio bx8 monitors. i also run it without cabinet sims into a mesa 295 power amp into a H&K Attax 4x12 and into my Spider valve 1x12 combo.
the big note is that line 6 recommends headphones that are in the 150-600 ohm range. mine are 64 ohm, but they still sound good. they just get way too loud if you turn the master knob up high.
Thanks for replies dudes, I'm encouraged...I'll be back later to let you know how it sounds ![]()
Ok...plugged in and been thru presets and it aint great. It's sounding thin...no meat! I know it's early days tho. Any suggestions pls? I'm gonna download software and try some patches from custom tone for now...
You don't say whether or not your HD500 Output mode is set to studio/direct. Is it?
yes it's set to studio...
First, get the latest firmware, then try again. And ignore the presets.
Download Nick's 16x4 amps bundle as a better starting point than the presets.
Also, what kind of music do you play so we can give you some pointers.
thanks for replies...
yep I've updated firmware.
Where do I find Nick's amp bundle? Who is Nick??lol
Thanks for the link....will give it a try.
I've also gone to a new blank patch and just switched on an amp with nothing else. Sounds way better than the presets!
Yep, that's a much better way to start. Hopefully you're starting to find some sounds that make you go ....OMG
Ozbadman, yep i'm finding sounds that are making me go O....MG!! Marshall jcm 800 with a Vetta wah and nothing else is totally doing it for me atm! this box rox!
sweeeeet
Oh, I (try to) play blues, rock, funky stuff..anything really, which is why I like the idea of amp modelling...so many tone choices! Been looking forward to getting some nice soft bluesy distortion tones...
Sounding good now! Presets are scary!
