Liquid-Fire just got out of the studio, Part 1

Well, as the title states, my band just got out of the studio.  Now before everyone gets all happy, it was just to record a demo.  Cover tunes only.  I know..  I had objections as well, but we needed it for our press kit.  Anyway, I'd really like your thoughts on the mixes.  No holds barred.  Pick on the playing, mix, choice of song, etc.

I appologise for having to break this up into mutilple posts.  The max upload size is 15mb and I encoded these into a pretty high bit rate for the full effect.

So here goes:

The recordings are great and all the performances except for the vocalist are great.  The singer just drags everything else down and making it not very listenable to me.  I would not listen a second time.  There of course could be millions that disagree, but you asked for an opinion.  If you are having fun with it all then nothing else matters.

    Comfortably Numb

Sounds really good.  The singer is pretty good, actually.  He needs work, but is pretty damn good.  I love the keyboard sounds. The playing, singing is really good. The guitar playing is really good.  The bass playing is obviously accurate, but rather indistinct.  It blends into the keyboard a bit too much.  Maybe add a little highs to get a bit of attack.

A couple of things-turn the rhythm guitar up.  The lead guitar tone is really too distorted.  Gilmore is much cleaner, more power amp/volume than preamp distortion.

    I have a weird question-is that a drum machine?

Over all, it's a very good cover....but, it needs more passion, except for the lead guitar. For example, the singer is accurate, but I don't believe him.  I know he didn't write it, but he needs to feel the words and react emotionally when he sings.  That's a complaint I have about a lot of singers in general.  I'm in no way saying it's poor or bad-it's quite good.  But to bring it to the next level, to grab peoples attention and keep it, they need to hear the emotion.

    Dead or Alive

First, the song is in the wrong key for the singer-he sounds like it's a bit tough to hit some of the notes, but he does hit them. But again, no passion. No balls. Who ever is singing backup is doing it right-that's a guy who's got a pair.

The acoustic guitar, frankly sounds, honestly terrible.  It sounds plastic.  The lead guitar sounds great-maybe a bit over distorted, but there's fire in his playing.

Same comments about the bass-dude, you could be a keyboard-you need something to make you sound more like a bass.

Keyboards-good tone, but are sitting strangely in the mix-they sound seperate.

    No More Tears

Pretty good.  But the timing is, honestly not good.  Everyone is rushing the beat.

There's a guitar in the lower left that gets out of time and the tone-ugh.

    Keyboards-same as above.

The guitar player needs to turn the distortion down.  His tone for all three songs is too harsh.

Bass-the playing is there but you disappear when the other instruments come in. The tone is too indistinct.

I'm being brutally honest.  Overall, really good job, but overall-more balls.  Honestly, I wouldn't pick those songs to cover, but those are hits, so what do I know?

If your goals is to get cover gigs, excellent job.  I'd book you.

I don't know where the other songs are, but I listened to "Numb".  It's tough to compete against the original, but overall it sounds good.  Drums & bass & keys are rather good.  Sometimes the singer sounds good & other times somewhat marginal/pitchy (especially during the chorus).  Guitar playing is quite good , but too much distortion on lead tone.
