Potential buyer with a question on the DT50

I have a HD500 and love it. I currently play it onstage through a pair of JBLPR12s and at home I either go through my Blue Sky monitors or Tech 21 Power Engine. I think having a tube power stage would be fantastic and the connectivity between the DT50 and the PD500 is compeling.
I just do not understand the preamp concept. From what I understand, in a standalone configuration the DT50 has hour internal modeled preamps. Does this mean when I hook up my HD500 everything comes through the preamp models in the HD500 and the ones in the DT50 are bypassed? So with the HD500 connected I'm only using the power section of the DT50?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Rick
the DT50 itself has 4 "voicings" which is the equivelent of pre-amps.
using with a pod HD has a few benefits....
2 way communication... changing the amp knobs changes the tone on your pod and you can save it.
all the pre-amps can be used from the HD, and it recreates the appropriate power amp settings in the analogue realm (not modeling) by changing some relays etc internally....
in low power mode, the DT50 will use the full amp models in an attempt to give you the tube goodness without the volume.
but yes, when connected only one preamp is used they are not stacked... the HD preamps go direct to the power amp.
Thank you for the reply, that is helpful, So, if I insert a powersoak of some sort I can always crank and keep the analog power sections. Otherwise there is a crossover point, as I increase volume, where the modeled output section begins to fade into the analog power amop section?
Rick
they've gone into great detail on the pre's specifically for use with the DT50.
the pre's are useful for other amps and usage as well...
but with the DT50 specifically you can count on behaviour consistent with the actual amp being modeled
the AC30 sounds like an AC30
the Deluve sounds like a Deluxe
the schnozberries taste like schnozberries ![]()
the combination impresses the crap out of me....
it's loud as hell though... just FYI, depending on the volumes that you'd be playing at...
you may end up using the full models rather than the pre's
So how much value am I getting out DT50 if I'm using mostly full models?
Rick
The DT50 does a great job with the full amp models too, but you need to use it differently.
When using the full amp models in the HD500 you want to make sure that you don't double up on poweramp characteristics. This means that you'll want to run the DT50 as a transparent form of amplification. To do that, set the DT50 to class A using Voicing I. This will deliver a fairly transparent amplification of the full amp models.
The amp really comes into its own when using the PREs though. The other benefit of using the PREs in the HD500 is that it frees up DSP for effects.
