HD500 for Acoustic???

I recently volunteered to be a fill-in acoustic guitar for our phrase band.  I'll be called into duty in a few months.   I'm in need of a direct box and was wondering if I could use the HD500 w/o any amps/effects for this purpose?  I would be playing directly into the PA.  Sure it would cost more but I figure I could use the HD500 for other things (should I need to step in on electric, goofing off in GarageBand, or as an effects for my home tube amp).   Would greatly appreciate any feedback I can get on using the HD500 (or any of the other HD units) vs a direct box.

Thanks.

    Yes, you can.

It comes with a patch called "Acoustic Air" that really made the acoustic I use come alive. Really basic effects like a comp, a little reverb and delay, no amp model. Do it, for sure.

Personally if I were an acoustic player, or a musician that played acoustic and did some singing I'd pick up an X3 Live on the cheap.  The X3L has much more feature that can accomodate an acoustic guitar player than the HD series.  The HD series is really designed to be a multi-effect/pre-amp unit for electric guitar players.  There's less out put flexibility, channel separation, and no acoustic specific preamps.  That's my 2 cents and the reason I still have my X3L sitting here on not on the 'Bay!

It will work out, however I found that its a little quiet when I plugged it in without any effects or sims.  How I set it up was I did a dual amp setup both with now drives, i think i used a twin and a lux.  sm57 off on one amp and sm57 on on the other. put some room reverb and very subtle delay.  As far as the podx3 suggestion, it is valid, I have one but I find that my setup works just fine and I dont have to lug around two pod devices.  Plus it sounds great, and its not even a real acoustic.  Its a LP with split coils, into an Acoustic Sim (Boss AC-3).
