Thoughts on Pod XT3 Live/Bose L1 Model1 Single Bass/ Variax 500 for Single Live performer!

I currently have a Variax 500/Pod XT Live/Tech 21-60 Watt Amp/Tech 10 Small Amp & 2-Dan Electro Guitars. I am an old school Acoustic, Blues, Funk, Jazz & Rock  Musician. Besides orginal music I play & sing a lot of Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Johnny Lee Hooker, Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull & some Elvis Costello!

Considering/Attempting to perform single with The Bose L1 Model 1 Single Bass & upgrade to the new Pod XT3 Live for Vocals & Guitars [Variax & Dan Electro].

Or I could keep my Pod XT Live and add the Bose Tone Mixer/Modeler etc. or maybe a small mixer with some reverb.

Venues would range from Bars, Restaurants, Coffee Shops to even background stuff at some book stores.

Does any of the above make sense to any of you older band/bar/concert gig performers?

One question on the new XT3 Live what else can I run with vocals [single amp modeling or duo etc,]. I assume just vocal & guitar [Acoustic or electric]

Thanks

Willie B

Small world...I just got a Bose L1 sytem model 1 with a 1 B-1 sub (soon to be 2) and the T1 Bose digital mixer. I am running the output of my Spider valve (pod 2.0) and my Gibson acoustic direct in the mixer. I play in a 3 piece that does a kind of unplugged show...meaning we do acoustic/electric stripped down  versions of blues and classic tunes. I also use a Gretsch g5120 (think Brian Setzer) for blues/rockabilly stuff.  I have a bass player plugged in with a bass pod xt too. I love it.Sounds incredable. the mixer is the secret weapon almost kewl enough on its own with a couple of powered monitors. but with the L1 tower and B1 sub the dispertion of sound is spooky good.

    you will not be disapointed...

however I have owned a variax 300... nice modeling and d tuning, The Tele models and les pauls rewl. great software. great studio guitar but you know preformance wise I  just cant get that acoustic dynamics and feel for live stuff that I get with my Gibson Songwriter deluxe or the bigsby smooth trem and spank I get with my Gretsch.

Your results may vary. Also its just kinda small for a sit down guitar and the build quality leaves much to be tweeked before it will be gig ready. I had to have  a fret job done locking tuners the bridge intonation was almost unsetable. replaced the nut...I mean alot of work to get it ready and even then....well maybe thats just me but I seem to prefom better and I get tons of complements on my Gibson and Gretsch people come up to the stage to checkem out...with the Variax I never got...well lets say ...not so much.

    Just my 2 cents.

    1. with the X3L you get basically two channels. so you can either have 2 guitar model or a vocal and a guitar or anything else you want to plug in

    2. I wouldn't even consider the bose, they are too expensive for the sound quality they give and the disperse sound very badly. I might recomend a yorkville unity(active version) series since there's a lot of bang for your buck but really there's a ton of good options with a bose kind of budget

    3. Variax is nice for versatility, but for the groups you mentioned your playing you should get a real guitar. Be very careful if you buy a new gibson though. They're not coming off the line real consistent right now so just make sure you get a good one

Sorry to have to say you gotta be kiddin about the Bose not haveing great sound dispertion...the quality thing IMHO is way off mark too... I have never had as many complements as I did last Wendsday with mine. Its is without a doubt the easiest setup and most even clearest disprestion of sound I have heard in its price range...I have been playing bars since 1984 off and on so I am not talking to you from a bedroom jammer (not that there anything wrong with that) kind of place.

I sold the stuff I was using and that paid for most of the Bose, so the expensive thing is relative to how much gear you are using that the Bose replaces...

1 Tower and 2 subs  fills a 3 peice in a 250 seat club running the main on 1200 and the channels volumes around 11. Thats a ton of headroom still...

Just try one (they have a moneyback gaurantee of 45 days...I bet you don't return it. Its changed everything for me recently all for the good.

      Peaceout

I've tried the Bose myself, and I've heard others Bose systems for their concerts. With and without the "enhancers". I also know who makes them and what their made of. So it's not a matter of ignorance on my part in forming my opinion.

Dispersion is a matter of beamwidth, coverage area and uniformity.  There is not really such a thing as "clear dispersion"(although in the world of sound this is subject to opinion)

When I said poor dispersion I did not mean that they were unclear sounding. I meant they are not uniform in their coverage. Some people will hear clearly, others will not. True there is an element of the room affecting this also, but in comparison to many other speakers these to not disperse like the competition does. Bang for the buck is better elsewhere, just stay away from the junk at guitar center

I don't know exactly what you sold and replaced with your Bose, it sound like your happy with the trade. Many people are. Partly beacause the Bose system(s) are not BAD sounding like some of the stuff out there, but also because they just spent their college fund buying them and don't want to be told anything negative about them

It sounded before like you had not yet purchased the Bose, And I was just trying to encourage you to wait and see what else there is available. Standard buyers wisdom really. Sound systems these days are really much better than in 1984, I think I can safely say you will by happy with your Bose. You just may someday feel a pang of jealousy when someone shows you their dream system in a side by side comparison.

I have noticed since I purchased this system alot of Bose deciples or just Bose haters or  the "I am so Pi$$ed they cost so much there not worth it there fore they suck"   LOL!

Since when was 2 grand for a 1000 watt comparable quality system alot of money? Maybe for kids but for working musicians...you get what you pay for. Its almost like a bunch of EPI players dogging Gibson cause they cant afford the product  just basically Pi$$ed at the company

I am neither... I play what works at a resonable price point period. I have this thing dailed in "with my enhancers" great!!

No I didnt spend my college fund....I am  44yrs old. I think thats way gone by now.  Yes, I have heard and played through many proffesional touring front of house systems to  small club system from JBL to Behringer so I hope I have a pretty good ear after all these gigs.

I started in 84 but my most recent gig was last week so I feel I am pretty current. There are many better systems out there right now but they cost alot more. and usualy requier a truck, much setup time, a sound guy you have to pay etc.... This system was only $2200.00 and setsup like a dream and sounds awsome...thats not alot of money for a decent P.A. ...Also I never implied ignorance on your part...I just have a much diffrent opinion based on my experiance ...I just think in my opinion we will agree to disagree about the Bose.  its not because I have invested and dont want to be wrong ...I buy what works for our ears and as soon as it doesnt workout for us its outta here. This system  has all my band mates smileing and more importantly the club owners smileing too. I have yet to see another system for around 2 grand I would rather use...

Anyhow Peace out to you and hope youguys find the right PA systems at the right level of proffesionalism that works for you. I know I have.
