Can I use the PRE amp sims direct to FOH?

Downloaded a JCM800 patch from Custom Tone and it sounds great through my headphones.

Only problem is it's the PRE not the full amp sim.

I was very surpried to see it was a PRE amp sim. I've had the HD500 for a year and never even considered Pre sims.

I believed I'd need the full amp sim running direct to FOH.

Is anyone using PRE amp sims going direct, or is the one I down loaded gonna sound naf at gig volume level?

I run pre amp sim's to FOH all the time.  So, yes you can run a pre amp sim.

You'll be missing the element of power amp saturation/distortion in the preamp models.  However, I'm sure FrozenOzone was also using cab models with the preamp models.  Those are separate items.  Using just the preamps and no cabs, I think you'd find that rather unpleasant.

Some people like the sound of some of the preamp models over the full ones.  I like running the full ones now that there's an adjustable master volume parameter.

Preamp-only models can be configured to include any cabinet model you like as well as mic modeling and ER convolution (if the output mode is configured as Studio/Direct, which is probably the best choice for FOH, unless you're using an external cabinet emulator).  In fact, a cabinet model actually does get assigned to each preamp-only model by default.  Of course you can choose not to use a cabinet model, but I'm with Karl in thinking that's not such a good idea.

If you want pristine clean or tight high-gain, you might actually prefer some of the models used as preamp-only.  The added benefit to doing this is that it saves on DSP resources that can be used for other things.

+1 to both Karl and Gregr.

I use pre amps for my metal/dirty tones and I use full amps for my clean stuff. I also use the cab and mic sims when using any pre amp model.  So, selecting a pre amp model does not disable the cab and mic sims unless you disable them manually.
