i just read this here:
http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-4695
and it says that the POD needs 150-600 ohms headphones
I've been using these, rated at 32 ohms:

WHAT HAVE I DONE!!??!!
wait a minute. i just checked the ohms on the Sennheiser 280 Pro and they're 64 ohms
what am i not understanding? is it safe to use Grados?
they're safe... i've used the 280's for years.
the requirements are basically saying that if your headphones don't meet this criteria they are unsupported...
because some outside that range can have noise etc...
so, you can use low impedence headphones, but, it's not going to break anything??? It will only decrease sound quality?
I think the only thing you'll find with the lower imdedance headphones is that they are going to distort at a lower volume. I think the thing Line6 is referring to as far as damage is that it may damage your headphones not the unit itself. They are just covering their butt so they don't have 1000's of users saying that their HD blew out their headphones.
I have the Senn. 280's and they work fine and to get headphones in the 150-600 ohm range you'll be spending as much or more as your HD unit itself. Heck I've used iPod earbuds in a bind at gigs to tweak patches you just have to keep the volume lower.

That is not what Line6Perry is saying...

Typically, our position with earbuds and POD's is that you shouldn't be using them because the resistance is not high enough on most earbud type headphones for the Phones output circuitry. I have seen damage to the components (op amps) in the past PODxt Live's as a result of people using earbuds, FYI.
If you are worried, buy a cheap headphone amp; providing you wouldnt prefer to buy new headphones.
I use a FiiO E6 amp (about £20 from amazon) and it makes my headphones sound much better with the HD. My headphones are about 50ohm.
Without the amp, my headphones sound BAD; I can only assume its the frequency dependent impedence mismatch, since they are very good if used with my MP3 player.
Do USB audio interfaces (specifically, this Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 http://www.focusrite.com/products/audio_interfaces/scarlett_2i2/) include a headphone amp? Would it be a better option to plug output into this, and utilize the Headphones output on the Focusrite instead of directly into the HD500? Not sure if the device really has a dedicated headphone amp -- doesn't seem to specify on the website nor the user manual. My Audio Technica m40fs headphones only offer 60 ohms of resistance.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
