Routing Soft Synths

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place - as you can see it is my first post here so please move it to the correct forum if I've put this in the wrong place.
I haven't yet purchased a product, but was wondering if you could provide some help.
What I want to do is be able to route software vst synths through a POD. For example, Native Instrument's 'Massive'. I was considering buying the PODHD (black bean shaped one) but it seems there is not many ins/outs to be able to do this with?
My audio interface is the Novation Nio, and the routing for that can be seen here - http://www.westenddj.co.uk/upload/Products/nio_dia.jpg
One thing I had considered was routing the headphone out with a jack into the guitar pod and then back into the input. Would this work? The other concern is that my monitors are plugged into the the soundcard, and I can't plug them into the guitar POD as seen in the video for it on this site.
If someone could help me out and point me in the right direction as to how this could be done without having to use a microphone that would be great.
Thanks,
Adam.
Take a look at POD Farm 2.5. It would allow you to keep your Nio as your hardware interface, but adds lots of options for sound processing in software. If this interests you, do NOT get the version for iLok.
ah okay thanks I'll take a look. I was really after some hardware though, to get that unique sound. Is that not possible then?
So you want to route signal out of your PC, through the HD Bean, and back into the PC for final processsing? Could work, but I'm concerned about latency unless this is strictly for recording.
Yeah that's what I want to do. I don't need it for live shows and is simply for producing/recording. It looks as if the Pod 500 and such have a few more ins/outs?
. . . and the POD HD Pro has even more ![]()
haha it does look great!
I would definitley buy it if I new how to use it with my Nio! I can't work out how I would set it up for the life of me ![]()
Would it be safe to route the headphone out jack into the pod, then into the input jack?
Well the problem you're going to have is that the headphone socket will be stereo, and the Pod socket is mono. Also you will probably get an impedance mismatch - the Pod is designed for a guitar input and will probably not match you headphone socket's impedance. You could end up with either a quiet signal (which when boosted to a decent level will give lots of noise) or a distorted signal if it is overloading the Pod's input. I am not sure what will happen but the odds are it won't be good.
You should try the USB for re-amping. You would have to temporarily select the Pod ASIO - you could monitor with headphones connected to the Pod, and then record that way. When you are done switch back to the Nio for monitoring via speakers.
Ah okay thank you! So would the only way to have the pods effects on software synths be to record out into a mic, through the pod and then into the computer via usb? I have a mono mic (Bluebottle Rocket Stage 1) would that be a viable solution? Thanks again.
bump, sorry to be persistant, but am hoping to order by the weekend, but still don't know which product to get
To be honest I'm not even sure what you're suggesting with the mic thing. With the PodXT it is easy to re-amp via USB - keeping it all digital and no impedances to match. However the X3 and HD don't have this (the HD may get it eventually).
If your soundcard has a line out you can probably use that to connect to the guitar input of the Pod for re-amping (i.e. adding an effect to the recording on the computer).
An example of routing might be:
Computer''s sound card left output (you must have separate left/right signals so you can use a mono connecting cord), pan the already recorded sound in your DAW hard left to ensure maximum level is being sent > into Pod guitar input (adjust level from the computer for best signal/no distortion).
Record the Pod output onto another track.
Ah okay I see, well what I need it for is to have the effects on pre recorded guitar loops, that would already be on the computer as a wav. I want to be able to have the pod running through that, and on synth parts too.
Would this work using a midi cable from the out on the Nio, then into the Pod or the HD Pro, and then out back into the Nio's midi input. Would the gear show up as an input? Ive never used midi unfortunatley, so am sorry for asking as I have no idea how to link things up.
With the mic thing I was thinking I could Record the audio out from the speakers down a mic, into the pod and back into the pc via the usb?
Thanks.
MIDI is a data protocol design to allow music tech equipment talk to each other. It does not transmit audio, just control data such as program change, note on, note velocity etc. but not the actual audio.
To be honest it would be a lot easier using PodFarm 2 which has exactly the same sound as the PodXT/X3, unless you were specifically after the HD models which it does not include.
sounds like you just need to also pick up a pod farm computer license.
this will let you apply the effects to wav files via a plugin in your recording software.
you can use this with the HD Bean... but it will have different amp models than the bean, since it still uses amp models from the X-series pods... but its very useful and has tons of variety.
