Workbench Alternative Tunings - Over 200 Presets

Hey guys, I just finished doing some research on alternative tunings. I created over 200 new presets! Fun stuff
I'd love to share these with you but there's no tunings preset sharing option like we have with the model "bundle" and "collection" presets. All of the tunings presets are saved in a single file called "tunings.dat". If you want to load these tunings you'll have to overwrite that file. But PLEASE, FIRST copy the original tunings.dat file and create a backup of it; 2 backups isn't a bad idea. This is one of those "at your own risk" deals ![]()
You'll need to search for this tunings.dat file. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit so, for me it's located at (C:) > Users > MyName > AppData > Roaming > Line 6 > Variax Workbench > tunings.dat. It may be different for you and I'm not sure if this works on MAC ![]()
Download the tunings file here ![]()
Have fun!

Description and instructions from Vettaville.nl:
“Presets – Click to load alternate tunings from a presaved list. There are 25 predefined alternate tunings to choose from. You can also save your own tunings and access them here for use at anytime.”
“Remember what the PRESETS button provides? That’s right, a presaved list of 25 alternate tunings ready to load up and use. To get to them, just click on the PRESETS button and simply select the tuning you wish to load. Note that you can also Save and Delete your alternate tunings.” This dialog is shown in the attachment below.
I also love that 99 page guide on alternate tunings called Alternative Tunings Primer and Charts.pdf which you turned me onto in that collection of Variax related manuals.
For anyone who has not yet downloaded the assorted manuals and guides, the link again is here: http://www.box.com/s/9i3hkirxopxq7aopl0bx
Some very useful stuff.
I added a bunch of new presets and updated the link. Please re-download the .zip file if you you want to check out the new tunings.
There is no good way to order these so, please forgive the seemingly random nature of the list ![]()
I downloaded the file, but I still don't see presets. Any tips?
BTW I am on a Mac.
Little off topic, but someone looking in here might know the answer.
Is there a way, via workbench, to change the tunings stored on the tuning wheel of my JTV-69? If I want to raise a pitch of a string by an octave, I can't do it via the virtual capo method, as there is no 24th fret. I want to try some nashville tunings, but want it on the tuning wheel as opposed to being stored with a particular model. Is this possible?
Second, I have a question about the virtual capo. When I fret the altered tuning, does the guitar figure out where I am fretting, say, 5th (17th) fret, then raises the pitch by 5 semitones, or does it listen to the pitch and then match that pitch, warts and all if my intonation is off a touch or I fret kind of hard and push it a little sharp?
hmmm well this is ok man but the better way to do this is to save each tuning present to a patch that way people can load the patch anywhere they choose I have no idea how you .dat file works and I do not want to overwrite any of my advanced tunings I have over 30..
I just made a new thread suggesting that Line 6 add a Variax patch area to Customtones so that we can indeed upload a tuning patch not some 30 patch set thingy.. I mean I want to choose what I get now since I I have done most of the tyicall tunings I would probably not donload much but I surely will upload my 30+ I lost count but they shoudl be seperate files.. not a .dat file...
Hey, if you find a "better" way to create, save and share tunings then, by all means, you should do that and share the results with us ![]()

We look forward to your files. It's good to be part of a community where people like guitar4u and (hopefully) you volunteer their time and effort to share their own work. Others who think it's useful can use it, and those who don't can ignore it but still respect the efforts of the contributor.
Don't take it personally though, if someone responds to your gracious contributions by saying it should have all been bundled into a .dat file.......![]()
Please read my initial post carefully guys. I am NOT an employee of, or affiliated with Line 6 in ANY way. I am simply a user (like you guys) who is sharing something with you. I spent several hours researching and creating just about every tuning I would ever want or need and thought I'd share it with you to save you the trouble. I am not offering support for Line 6 and if you do not feel comfortable working with .dat files as I advised in my original post then you should ignore this post. These tunings are for advanced users who don't mind working with these files and making tweaks.
Btw, I do agree that this method of creating and saving tunings preset is not good. If you guys are passionate about it then let Line 6 know by creating a ticket or giving them a call ![]()
