Professional artist tones?

Just moved up form a pocket pod to an XT and have decided very quickly that custom tone is a mess - it's disappointing that finding a decent tone is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Why on earth is there no rating system?

 

Anyway doe sanyone know of a good source of artist tones, preferably professionally produced? Surely someone is making money producing great tones for line6 kit?

 

Isn't line 6 missing a trick here selling only amps and effects? Come on line 6 put together a bundle of artist tones, I have cash waiting.

    ps the search function in thi sforum is not very good. I search for 'professional artist tones' the title of my post and I get nothing.....

    custom tone is it... and they are rated...

    try using http://guitargeek.com and build your own...

    you'll learn lots of artists tricks and find out what you like...

      Ok I concede that there is some rating in custom tone but when your faced with hundreds of tones for one artist/song who's going to lookinto each one to see what the rating is, even it it was accurate? It's practically impossible to find anything good in custom tone. Its a free for all mess that Line 6 really should have sorted out years ago.

       

      Of course I do make my own tones but I'd also like to replicate some artists without f'in about for hours just to be miles away.

       

      As for guitargeek, it's pretty rubbish. It shows diags of the gear but there's no amp or fx settings so it's spretty useless.

       

      All a bit frustrating.

        Maybe you should upload some of your tones rather than being dismissive of people who have uploaded their tones. The problem with any tone is that unless you have the exact same set-up as whoever made the tone, the presets will probably sound different to how it sounded to the creator.

          I'm not being dismissive, it's just practically imopssible to find anything decent. And some users have uploaded dozens of identical tones or variants of them. Perhaps teh work in progresses should have been deleted along the way to their final effort.

           

          As for tones sounding differnt from what the creator heard, creators should spend sometime setting their amps tone controls flat and the pod's cab/air appropriately, perhaps then I might hear an approximation of what they hear.

            it won't matter if they set it all flat.... they might have a full marshall stack and you might have a crate bedroom amp....

            they might have a 3000$ gibson and you might have a 100$ first act....

            there are going to be differences between these choices as there should be... you should get something for all that cash....

             

            you really just have to regard custom tone or any tone as a starting point...

            tweak it for YOUR taste... much like the person posted the tone tweaked it for theirs....

            Perhaps you could start the trend? Why not spend the time yourself that it takes to create good tones, and provide us with some of your own fully annotated and documented examples of what a useful Customtone submission should be? If you've already done so, please point us to them.

             

            Meantime, if Customtone doesn't suit you, just don' t use it rather than disparage the efforts of those who do.

            As explained that doesn't work. For example, I don't even use a guitar amp - I use my professional monitors to listen to the amp simulated tone, i.e. how it would sound in a control room. How is that ever going to match your guitar, your amp, your monitoring volume and your room acoustics? It's not. And just what is an appropriate AIR setting? If one setting fitted all applications there would only be one setting. The options are there because everyone's set-up is different.

             

            Even your own-rolled presets which sound great at home might sound like complete crap when you take them to a gig and play at different volumes and in different shaped/sized rooms. It all has an effect.

    May be a good business opportunity for you!

     

    There is some competition, but I suspect this guy has simply downloaded the entire CustomTone libray and is sellling the whole set of individual tone files that anyone could download themselves.

    Depending on the type of guitar, amp, cables and other equipment you use a tone can sound very different from one setup to another.

    You can try out entire bundles of PodXT patches (including mine).  Back-up your current bundle first, because I think these will over-write your current bundle (128 patches if I remember correctly).  Even if you think my patches are lousy (many are favorites of mine from others), I think plenty on the link are good.  A patch I got from Rob Tognoni: I used it on a song of mine that later played on the radio BBC.  Also try Antti Loponen's bundle if you like unusual tones. (I am not a pro musician, though long ago I was semi-pro on keyboards.  Tognoni is/was a pro, he opened for Sting once)
