POD HD Pro humming?
-

I tried to play the POD HD Pro in front of a Engl Savage.
Guitar - POD HD in - Line out - into Engl in
Without even turning the POD HD on I have a terrible humming, if I unplug the power from the HD Pro, the humming stops. There is no difference, if I turn the HD Pro on or off.
What do I need to do?
Have you tried it on a different set of outlets - both the ENGL and Pod?
I tried different outputs at the POD HD Pro, but always used the same input on the Engl (there is just one).
you said that even with the pod pro turned off you get lots of humming. it seems like the problem isn't any setup or anything like that with the pod; it must be a ground loop between the ENGL and Pod, or a bad cable. So I think you should see if you can replicate the problem without the pod in the chain, trying all your cables from guitar straight to ENGL. also try both the pod and ENGL plugged into different power outlets in your home or wherever.
Thanks for your comments.
Actually I tried this already. If i go straight into the Engl, there is no humming. No influence of cable or power outlets...
I think Meam is referring to a ground loop. He is not suggesting that there is a bad earth with your power. Your Engl alone may not hum but, combine it with another device plugged in, and it may. This is quite a common issue.
As Meambobbo says, try another outlet in your home. There are other fixes you could try too such as:
- Hum isolating transformers such as the Behringer HD400 or the Ebtech Hum-X.
- Break the ground wire on one side of one of your cables (*try it with an old cable).
It looks like the Pod Pro does have a grounding pin. So it's gotta be some kind of ground loop between the two. Try this - rather than plug them both into different outlets, plug them both into a power strip that's only plugged into one wall outlet. That should guarantee you've got a common ground voltage for both pieces of equipment. This doesn't necessarily guarantee that the ground in your outlet is correct. If you still get hum beyond that, try it at someone else's house. If you still get hum beyond that, it's possible that the ground is shorting with one of the signal leads in the Pod. I'm not sure if a hum eliminator will fix that.
Hi,
Were you able to eliminate the hum with Meambobbo's advice?
Thanks,
David
I'm having the exact same issue with my Mesa Boogie Roadster head. I'm plugging both the head and the Pod HD Pro into a rack mounted power conditioner... still get the hum, whether the pod is on or off.
I get the same hum too if i configure the pod to go through the effects loop return of my roadster.
Have you tried any of the ideas above to nail the hum?
+1,
From meambobbo:
"rather than plug them both into different outlets, plug them both into a power strip that's only plugged into one wall outlet. That should guarantee you've got a common ground voltage for both pieces of equipment."
Also, try different AC Outlets, Power strips, Guitar Cables and if possible try the setup in a different location.
Thanks,
David
