Hi everyone !!! i have a question for you guys....i recentely purchased a ENGL E-530 Rack pre amp and i wonder how can i plug that in to the POD HD 500 if anyone has the same pre amp with te POD or knows how to make this work...let me know...thank you !!!
Looking at the manual here ... http://www.englamps.de/uploads/tx_ddfproducts/OM_E530_Tube_Preamp.pdf
Cute pre-amp! There are several ways you could hook up the HD500. I am assuming you want to go stereo as per the preamp capabilities and that you are more interested in using your pre-amp channels than modelled amps.
Front of Amp
Guitar ==> HD Input
HD 1/4" Output ==> Amp Input
This is the simplest way and works well for many people. It works well if you are mainly using the clean channel on your amp or you are only using effects that normally sit in front of the amp(e.g. compression, wah, distortions, some modulations). Not always so great for reverbs and delays etc, particularly where higher gain tones are used. It is also OK for amp modelling if setup correctly.
In the Loop
Guitar ==> Amp Input
Amp FX Loop Send ==> HD Input
HD 1/4" Output Left ==> Amp FX Return Left
HD 1/4" Output Right ==> Amp FX Return Right
This way works very well for effects like echoes and delays, reverbs and some modulations. Not so well for distortions and wah. Amp Modelling will almost certainly sound weird.
Four Cable Method (well actually more cause of the stereo)
Deep breath ...
Guitar ==>HD Input
HD FX Send ==> Amp Input
Amp FX Send Left ==> HD FX Return Left
Amp FX Send Right ==> HD FX Return Right
HD 1/4" Output Left ==> Amp FX Return Left
HD 1/4" Output Right ==> Amp FX Return Right
This is the all singing, all dancing method for hookup. It allows you to put all effects where you want them, to use your pre-amp channels correctly and allows for amp modelling too. It is a pain to intially get your head around and setup but the results can be excellent. For more details on 4CM and what it does check the link here. http://line6.com/support/docs/DOC-2523
Oh, and if you buy the add on Engl Midi Switch Z11, you can change channels on the pre-amp when you change presets on the HD500. This is great for changing channels and effects all in one touch of a footswitch on the HD500.
thanks for your quick reply bro !!
so when you say AMP, are you talking about the PRE AMP? or the power amp?
Wherever I say 'Amp' I mean your Pre-amp. I am assuming you are plugging the pre-amp into ... something upstream but for the purposes of the cabling I am talking about the pre-amp throughout.
+1 to jimsreynolds,

Sorry for my ignorance here but i know how to hook my pod to my effects loop return in my Guitar amp and in the front as well but what i wonder is how can i integrate the ENGL pre-amp to my POD in some way that i can use the POD as effects only device and the ENGL pre -amp as my distortion...thank you guys !!!
The four cable method that I describe above works partially for this. It allows you to turn off the POD modelling and use the Engl as your pre-amp model.
However, what you cannot do is use the Engl Pre-amp into a modelled power amp on the HD. There is no way to split the two functions on the POD: Pre and Power amp. If you want to use your Engl straight into a desk then you would need to use the 'Frequency Compensated' outputs on the Engl as this will apply some of the tonality associated with a power amp (if I understand correctly).
Stay in the mix and in the know.
