Auditioning custom tones

Hi, am I missing something or is this the process for auditioning custom tones for my Pod HD500

- go to the custom tone page (or buy a ton of tones off eBay)

- download a tone based on its description

- open the download folder and drag that tone into a SetList location (or double click it and it appears as the first tone in the "Best of ..." set list

- play the tone using my guitar/headphones

- if I don't like the tone, copy a new tone over it

Do the above 3,000 times because I just bought 3,000 tones off eBay for 10 bucks ...

There's got to be a better way and more expedient way to listen to a tone!!

Thanks,

Karma

Somebody should periodically zip the entire collection. The only problem with this is the number of tones is always increasing. I don't think there is a quickest way to do that.

PS: Buying tones on eBay? I didn't know somebody was selling tones..

Suppose you bought a packaged, zipped bundle of 3,000 iTune songs that you did not know anything about except that they can play individually on your iPhone. They are not organized in any way. How would you audition them?

    Re: Auditioning custom tones

First thing is to stop BUYING tones when you can get them for free from CustomTone here.

I used to build CUSTOM banks of tones for players of all styles before the JTV guitars came out as I was one of the seemingly few who knew how to create or edit guitar tones based on a description or hearing a songs guitar sound, rhythm, lead, whatever.  I did this quite successfully by request only.  I charged a fair amount of money agreed upon based on the request and time it took to get the sounds exactly the way the customer wanted.  That is something worth buying, not a pile of sounds that could have come from anywhere.

It would be TRAGIC if whoever is SELLING 3,000 tones on eBay actually got them mostly from CustomeTone for FREE and just bundled them together and charged money for it!!!

I'll bet that after getting BLASTED by most of us on how bad the POD HD500 Factory preset sounds were...I wouldn't be surprised if Line 6 changed all or most of those sounds to really well done and USEABLE sounds for the retailers to simply plug in and play.  There is some new update coming..it's well within the realm of "possible".  Because if there is anything "simple" - it is the majority of the retail sales people around the world.  Minimum wage, no commissions, what incentive to learn anything about any of the gear on the floor?  So having great sounding factory presets will help resolve that problem that Line 6 already has gotten itself stuck in.

If this does happen...I hope it's not too late to "put the spilled milk back into the bottle".   PLUS, all retail stores would have to either put a NEW unit out on display or take the time to update the one already out on display - IF these places even bother to display these Line 6 products?

I think there are several good suggestions for auditioning sounds posted here, but I'm posting here to tell you and anyone else thinking this - DO NOT BUY SOUNDS - they are here for free!!  Unless you have someone build you custom tones to your specs - THAT is worth paying an expert EDIT user to do in my opinion.

    Take care,

    Neal

        Re: Auditioning custom tones

As of 8:15 pm on 24th March UK time there are 2683 tones available for the HD500 (I just looked). Granted there might not me more than 270 decent ones! ;-) but they are there.

I looked at the ebay listing and they are quite clear that they have taken these tones from custometone so no deception. But the tones are there for free4. In fact about 9 months ago I posted a few zips containing all of the custome tone files to that date. I stopped doing this because the stuff was being updated so much that I couldn't keep up - and to be honest I realised that the best thing to do was to selectively search for the tones that you wanted. I wouldn't be surprised if the person posting these tones on ebay used my zips as a basis (and also another user called Texxx also uploaded a load). Search through my old posts and you can have the zips for free - I didn't charge.

Dont get me wrong the seller on ebay is quite clear that these files are available for free on custome tone and that his item is for your ease of use- he is not deceiving anybody, I am not convinced of its value.
