Tip: Using HD500 tones in HD Bean with HD 2.00.0 Editors

Some of you may know this, but I thought I'd share anyway.
I had been trying to copy my HD500 tones to my HD Bean (HD Edit 2.00.0) and kept getting the dreaded "Invalid data found in one or more patches. These patches have been reset and named "New Tone (Reset)" error, and thought I would investigate this a bit further. By the amount of complaints about not being able to use HD500 CustomTone patches on their HD Beans, I believe many others have had the same issue. Here is a fairly quick fix . . .
1. Load any tones that won't load into your HD Bean into the HD500 Edit program (Yes, install HD500 Edit, even if you don't have an HD500).
2. Check the input options. I would bet that there is something else other than just "Guitar" or "Mic" in there. If so, change it to "Guitar", "Mic" or "Same". HD (Bean) Edit will not recognize "Variax" or "Aux" and will choke on them.
3. If the FX loop is being used, take it out. HD Edit will choke on that as well.
4. Open the HD Edit Program, and drag your modified tone directly from HD500 Edit into HD Edit. You can have them, both open at once.
5. Make sure you save your tone in HD Edit ![]()
I'm sure there may be a few corner cases, with whacky output options that I'm missing, but the above instructions should cover 99% of the HD500 tones.
Safe travels,
BigChas
It really helps ! Thank you
(Considering the customtone bundle available somewhere here, it's always a simple problem of setting the correct inputs.
Thanks again.
Hi,
Thanks but it doesnt work for most of my presets ... even with HD Edit 2.0 ... I feel very frustrated as my favourites tones are not available.
Line 6, you said that F/W 2.0 and associated HD Edit will solve the problem !
Are you opening them up in HD500 Edit first to fix the inputs?
Yes, but after few attempts switching on and off the input dialog box (guitar, variax ...) it worked.
I created a new setlist with corrected patchs in order to secure things.
Thank you BigChas52 for the tip.
Anyway, Line 6 tolds us that new version of F/W and HD Edit should solve compatibility issue beetween HD500, HD Desktop and HD Pro but it's really not the case ... there is still only 129 tones in custom tone and there is still necessity to use workarounds to transfert HD500 Tones to HD Desktop.
Why is it so difficult to solve this problem ? Just introducing a dialog box indicating what will be turned off by transfering HD500 in HD Desktop like Pod XT did when loading patchs without having Model Packs.
What a shame ...
for some reason It won't drop my dragged file from the hd500 edit to the pod HD setlist

Are you making sure that you are changing the input from "Guitar+Aux+Variax" to just "Guitar" first? It's working fine for me.
Hi,
Please find a thread with an in depth explanation of the problem, and most of all a sofware (shame on line 6 to not being able to do that by itself) to convert patches :
http://line6.com/support/thread/81074
A sum up of the situation (HD500 Patches on Custom Tone vs HD Bean) is present ... interesting thought.
For the most impatient here's the link for the sofware : http://www.jzab.de/

Yeah it works but only with one patch at the time in the HD 500 Edit if you add another patch and drag it to HD Edit it wont work it will say new tone etc.
Atleast it does that for me.
Another thing i notice is when i try to edit some patches i saves as hbe file after i have "converted" them from h5e files
If you later open one of those converted files and try to change it in some way say change cabinet it freezes the Edit software "well it freezes my whole computer" and one time i even had to hit the on the left enter pad button to restore the hardware as it refused to boot up.
That may have to do with my computer only and may not happen to all who try this "trick but dont say you haven´t been warned.
It is better to listen to the patches first in HD edit then open the patch in HD 500 Edit and create a new similar one in HD edit and overwrite it or even better delete the old file and save the newly created one then you can edit the patch anyway you want.
Oops didnt see the link to that converter software in the post above.
However hope this converter software works better than the change the input to guiitar and drag and drop "trick" that will save us a lot of problems
Yeah, it work great.
A new version is out with a graphical user interface, very nice work by johanneszab.
You should try and give us a feedback ![]()
Cheers
Yes that solve SOME problems
I thought it was a FILE converter that change the patch from a h5e to a hbe file
It is NOT a file converter atleast it did not convert any files for me.
It only convert/change the Pod HD 500 patch in some way i suppose?
After i tried to convert h5e files to hbe i found out that it didn´t convert them at all it was nothing to convert 0 files the software said
So i thick the button h5e also and then it said 2 files converted and backup made or somthing like that
I looked in the backup folder and it still was a h5e file did i do something wrong?
I dont think so as i tried every possible way there is with those buttons.
But i glad i had the backup button thicked as it creates a backup folder
So in that backup folder i tried to change the file-extansion to hbe from h5e
That would have been a quick way as it is just a matter of dragging all patches on to the HD Edit software and save it as a Bundle.
But that didn´t work for me it all it said the usual "new tone reset" etc..
Anyway so i open the HD 500 Edit (which by default have the input 1 source set to Guit+Aux+Varx and input 2 source to Same)
And drag in one of the h5e patches i have "converted" and change the input 1 source to Guitar
Then i drag that patch to HD Edit and tried to edit the patch and that worked fine.
So i tried to add some more patches to HD 500 Edit and drag them to HD Edit and that worked without any problem i didn´t have to close HD 500 Edit and open it again as i did before
I also tried to edit those patches and it worked without error.
So now i can fill all 128 spots on HD 500 Edit drag the to HD Edit and save them as a bundle
As i have spend some days to dl ALL Pod HD 500 patches from custom tone i now gonna "convert" them to hbe. files and try to categorize them in styles and artist, songs, or whatever i come up with i.e clean, dirty,fx.
This is a great idea but i still think it would be even better if we wouldn´t have to rely on third party application.
And Line6 came up with some sulotion like a FILE converter which is more flexible than this little tool.
Or something similar
The best solution would of course that HD Edit and HD Pro Edit and HD 500 Edit would accept patches made with any of those software.
Hey, strange issue.
On my side it really work as a file converter (except it doesn't change file extension, so it sould be done manually).
I tried even for setlist file and it work fine, so for me it's not encessarry to open HD500 Edit at all.
Anyway, I agree with you, Line 6 should do something about the fact that HD Desktop has only 128 presets cause of this 'incompatiblity' ...
Seems Pod HD Desktop is not a priority for Line 6 (Issue with FBV Express and looper is another not solved issue).
Very very dissapointing.

I dont get it. Why did u try to open an unconverted file (from the backup folder), where you changed the extension from .h5e to .hbe in the HD Edit software? Surely, that won't work, because nothing has been done.
You have to convert the file with the software (doesn't matter which extension), rename it into .hbe and load it with a current HD Edit Software.
The Extension says nothing about its content. Just because you rename a .avi into a .jpg file doesn't make that file to a picture. So, the software actually does "convert" its content (more or less). At least, for me all the files loaded afterwards.
When i download presets from the HD 500 customtone website, i usually rename then immediately into .hbe files. So, i accually only added the .h5e checkbox because of warfares demand.
But anyways, i can see that it does somehow confuse. I'll upload a new version in a few hours which converts the .h5e files and renames the extension as well.
Yes i agree that trying to open from backupfolder did not make any sense at all to you.
English is not my native language which you may have notice so i have to do a lot of "updating" in my post.
I can totallty see that your confused
But i did not tell the whole story.
Which was a big mistake i can see that now.
And yes i know that sometimes renaming or changing the file extansion dont make a file compatible to another program i´m not stupid.
Just like you said in picture files you can´t change it to an avi BUT you can change a jpg to a png.bpm.gif
And you can still open the file in almost all photo editor softwares and you can see a picture.
The same with text files software like office and adobe reader i.e doc. to pdf.
But you cant rename it to something like mp3 and open it in winamp and you will here music.
But here we talking about two software from the same manufactor who is very very similar and two hardware with very similar "specs"
And a history of softwares that could open patch from almost ebvery product ever made from Line6 Gearbox and Line6 Edit i.e you could open a patch made with Vetta Amp in gearbox even if you only have a guitarport hardware.
But THEN they made them so that you can´t open one file made for one particular soft with that other very similar soft with a slightly different name.
That was very strange for us who have been using Line6 products for a long time.
As i said earlier i have already dl ALL HD 500 patches from custom tone.
If you have to rename 2500+ patches from h5e to hbe theres a lot of work to do so if you can have a software that can do that for you it make perfectly sense.
So here is what i did
I created a folder and copy two patches to that folder and converted those two files with your tool.
I noticed that it created a backupfolder but i did not see any hbe files however
If i use a converter program i simply believe it will convert my files to somthing else like avi to mpg or mp3 to wav Doc to Pdf or whatever but i know it has to be in the same sort of "genre"
So i deleted the backupfiles and rename the remaining two files and tried to load ONE of them without any luck.
Then i tried again and used all the option in your tool and still no hbe files
So i try that thing with dragin the HD 500 Edit and drag the file to HD Edit and tried to see if i could tweak the patches as i said above
Then i wrote this post in here about your tool above
By then i was confirmed that you have to rename the file extension yourself
I then read here that it worked for someone else so i tried again.
I must have done something wrong as it did rename the file extension to hbe but i could not load a patch in HD Edit.
I deleted all my patches in the "backupfolder" copy the original patches again to the folder convert and rename all my patches again and now it worked.
So i must have done somthing wrong the first time i tried to rename them with the rename program.
Anyway many thanks for your hard work to make this tool
I did however noticed that some patches did not open in HD Edit after all one of those was the first the first patch i loaded after trying your tool.
But this is not your tools fault
It probably it has to do with compability issues with patches made with old versions of the HD 500 Edit software
I did notice that some of the very old hbe patches i dl for the HD Edit did not open in HD Edit it said that "new tone reset" so that can be the case in those files.
I miss the old days with Gearbox (well i still use it to tweak patches on my Pod XT) who could handle many different file types for Line6 products and simply just pointed that the patch will not sound as it suppose to do
As something is missing (an amp effect or whatever) but you could still open it.
If you want to rename all files into a folder at once:
If using Windows
===========
1) Open the command prompt ("cmd.exe"):
1. Click Start
2. Type
cmd
and press Enter
2) Type "cd" and add the path to the folder with all the files.
Ex: cd "C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Desktop\Folderwithfiles"
3) ren *.h5e *.hbe
If you want to do the opposite do
ren *.hbe *.h5e
If using Linux systems
==============
1) Open the command prompt (for example "Konsole" on Kubuntu):
K/System/Konsole (Terminal)
2) Type "cd" and add the path to the folder with all the files
Ex: cd "/home/yourname/Desktop/Folderwithfiles"
3) mv *.h5e *.hbe
If you want to do the opposite do
mv *.hbe *.h5e

No one said that, and so, we are in common about our file definition
. By the way, i'm neither a nativ english speaker, and i can completely understand you. I admit, that the tool lacked of a main feature, the rename function, and that i could confuse users. So, if you want to give it a new try, you can mass rename your files now.
But here we talking about two software from the same manufactor
who is very very similar and two hardware with very similar "specs"

I agree with you guys here, and i guess that line6 will fix it in a new patch, but usually it takes some time till companies react. So, in the meanwhile we can help ourselves.
Anyway many thanks for your hard work to make this tool
I did however noticed that some patches did not open in HD Edit after all one of those was the first the first patch i loaded after trying your tool.
But this is not your tools fault
That acctually would be a misbehavior of my tool and i would like if you could get me the name / URL to the patch. Maybe i can improve it a bit with that data.
I'm not really sure that Line 6 will correct that in future updates.
Last reply from them was quite ... rude.
Very disapointing for Pod HD Desktop users ... Pod XT era is gone ...
""That acctually would be a misbehavior of my tool and i would like if you could get me the name / URL to the patch. Maybe i can improve it a bit with that data.""
Sorry but i meant patches that was made for POD HD Bean aka hbe files on custom tone site not some patch that need to be "converted"
As they is already a hbe file made exclusive for HD Bean..
It is some of the first patches uploaded on custom tone for HD Bean from 2011 i could not open with HD Edit
As i´m a pretty new user my first version of HD Edit was 1.8 and i could not open them with that version and not 2.0 either..
So i dont think its your tool that is causing that fault
I could be wrong of course i´m no programer
The only programing i´ve done is when i tried to made some Vst plugins some years ago..
Maybe you can fix them and if you succeed that would be cool....
I will go thrue all the patches i dl but it gonna take a while of course..
Many of them i have renamed in order to not overwrite patches with similar patchname like clean
So can´t remember the exact url
My studio PC dont have an internet connection it is on that PC i test all patches as i dont want to be distracted when i make music otherwise i might go on internet and check mail or read some news or whatever...
So i use another PC for internet purposes..
I will upload those patches that didn´t open on dropbox when i finished testing all 2500+ patches
You can then dl them and maybe find a solution in your trool..
A lot is simply doublepost i.e how many Back In Black patches isn´t on the custom tone site?
Many is very similar to the first uploaded with only minor tweaking and some is simply double post with the exact settings.
The same goes for many of the clean patches
And many many patches is simply crap with tons of effects that you can´t use in a real life situation
Almost like the selling patches all manufactor of multiffects include in there units..
But i like to try them out as you MIGHT find a useful one before you delete them.
As a matter of fact i find one of the original patches on HD Bean so cool that i came up with an idea for a new song...
Anyway one might wonder why i dont make them myself??
Well i do....
I have an order of effects and amp settings for both clean and dirty sounds that i use as my standard setup
But it´s not wrong to look at others work or try to learn from them as a matter of fact most of the patches i dl from customtone and keep for my personal collection needs some final tweaking to suite my taste.
So how do I take out the effects loop? thanks
