line 6 spider IV 15, volume problem, effects and footswitch question.

Hi guys.
I recently became the proud owner of a line 6 spider IV 15 amp.
I seem to have a problem with the channel volume, the sound changes depending on which channel I select (without turning the volume knob) I know you can save the EQ volume and effects settings on each channel, but I have reset everything several times using the instructions that came with the amp, still I get a different volume level with each channel.
I have also noticed that I can change the master volume at any time on any channel, but if I move the channel volume knob the sound fades out. I can still turn the volume up and down, but even on full volume it is very quiet. I get round this by adjusting the channel volume knob to where I want it, then change from one channel to another and back again.
someone else also mentioned that the clean and insane channels both have preset effects that come on even though both the effects knobs are turned all the way off.
you can solve this problem by holding down the insane button when you turn the amp on, but is there any way this can be done without having to hold the insane button down every time you switch the amp on?
as far as the footswitch is concerned, a friend has given me a FBV2 pedal but it doesn't come with a cable. I have found one for sale online for £20 which is just a line 6 RJ45 cable, which is just an ethernet cable isn't it? do you have to use the cable as sold by line 6 or will any RJ45 cable do the same job?
sorry for the long winded first post, I just hope someone is able to help with my problems and questions.
I have heard that you can use a standard cat 5 rj45 ethernet cable as long as it isn't a crossover cable. is this true?
if it is then I have several ethernet cables here that would be perfectly fine. they are cat 5 cables and they are not crossover cables.
I could just try them but I didn't want to until I was sure it would be ok to do so.
The CAT5 cable must be a straight-thorugh one, if you use a crossover, you will fry a component on the amp board.
I can't explain why you are not getting the saved settings on your 4 channels, unless you are not saving the changed settings correctly - check the manual for the procedure. ALso the volume fading when you adjust the channel volume does not sound right - except that if the channel is saved with the channel volume at a loud volume, then you touch the channel volume knob (to wake it up) and it is set lower (than the saved setting), this would cause the volume to drop to what the channel volume knob is set at.
thanks, I have a spare standard cat 5 cable here that has never been used.
I haven't tried to save any settings. I play that many different songs and I am always changing my amp settings, so saving them all with only 4 channels would be quite hard.
I reset the factory settings just to be on the safe side. I have actually found out that the channel volume fades in the same place on each channel (as you turn the knob between 3 and 5) once you get beyond that level it sounds ok again
That sounds like exactly what I described - the volume saved on each channel is probably around the 5 level, when you touch the channel volume control and turn it between 3 and 5, you are lowering it from what the preset level is. You can either save each channel at a lower volume, or turn the channel colume control up to 5 before you select a channel.
shouldn't this problem of the volume preset be sorted when you reset the factory settings?
No, when you reset to factory settings, the channel volumes are reset to whatever those patches have. Again, this is a matter of learning how the amp operates. When you touch a control, you 'wake it up', and the parameter that the control works on then resets to wherever that knob is turned. If you turn the channel volume knob all the way to 10 (while the amp is off), then turn on the power and select a channel, the volume will be at the preset level. The moment you 'wake up' the channel volume knob by touching it the volume will be at full!
