Disappointed with the fx loop

I can't get it to sound clean (noiseless)
Most of what I need is inside the HD500, yes, but one of the reasons I bought it, was to be able to integrate it with my TriAxis,
and I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
Here's the signal route:
HD500 fx send output > TriAxis input
Triaxis outputs > HD500 FX return inputs
Both modes, stomp and line, are noisy, though stomp mode seems to sound fuller.
Mix is 100%, and both send and return levels are set to 0db.
I've also tried to use the loop with stomp boxes with the same result.
But... here's something funny: I also tried to loop to my old POD Pro and back (no cab sim, to try to stay close to what the TriAxis does)
and it was noiseless...
Why is that?
Anyway, the TriAxis is noisier than the average preamp, so I'm not expecting miracles.
I'll try again when L6 allows us to use just cab sims instead of preamps or full amps.
The thing that really annoys me is that the noise stays even when the fx loop is switched off.
I'm guessing that the switch operates before the loop, preventing the signal from croosing it,
but allowing whatever is on the loop to come into the pod and affect the signal (useful to keep
the decay of delays and reverbs, really annoying for my purposes)
Any hint?
Stay in the mix and in the know.
