Anybody that has had a DT25/HD500 for a while, coming from another amp....

I have a POD HD500 and Blackstar HT-5 amp...
I'm looking at the DT25... My question is... How much more pleasure do you get out of having upgraded to the DT25 having come from another amp?
I'm trying to quantify how much more benefit one would realize with the integration between the HD500 and the DT25... over the existing amp,,,
I'm happy with the Blackstar HT-5 but would consider the DT25 if the integration with the HD500 gives a lot of WOW factor...
Thanks,
Bob
This is an interesting question. I think the AMP is amazing, but I am noit coming from a tube background.
I think the following is a pretty good endorsement though!!
I have the DT-50 not the 25 but I would say it mainly depends on your style of music.
The DT amps are very diverse. The ability to get so many power amp sounds to go with your POD HD is what is so amazing.
I admit that I don't use the Class A, for example but for me the amp is truly awesome. If my POD HD stopped working for some reason I could use a footswitch and the amp alone and make it through a gig. That is a big plus for me.
You really have to try one, with a POD if you can. And I would suggest not trying it at store but try a friend's or someone on this forum that already uses a POD and a DT. This is because it does take some experience to set them up correctly and a salesperson at Guitar Center or Sam Ash most likely will not have the experience required.
If you live in the Tampa area I would be glad to help out.
Good luck!
I totally agree with Hollis! Just playing it at a store isn't enough! If you have a guitar center near you buy it. You have 30 days to return it although it will take some time and patience. The blackstar Ht5 is a nice amp( I've played it) but it doesn't compare to my DT50 head. Im in Chicago if you're close you r more than welcome to play the sh*t outta mine!!!!
Thanks for the offers... I'm in New Jersey though....
Yeah I like the Backstar HT-5 for what it is... Right now I'm just figuring out ... "if" I was looking to take the next step... what would I be looking at...
I'm also looking at one of the new Variaxs .... JTV69... but I need to wait and make sure that the fretboard issue gets resolved....
In perfect hindsight I screwed up a bit with my selection of speakers... I got 2 8 ohm speakers a Celestion BLue and an Eminence Canabis Rex and 2 Lopoline 1x12s... Because I went for the 2 1x12s.. I'm maxed out on the number of speakers I can attach to the DT25... unless I get a 4x12... but I like the idea of the 1x12s for portability....
Half the fun of this is trying to find the "perfect" tone... so I was thinkng about the Swamp Thang and either a Greenback, Scumback or Private Jack... but the way the ohms work out I wouldn't be able to use them all unless I put them all in a 4x12.... In hindsight I should have gotten the Blue and the Rex as 16 ohm speakers.... but I just realized that even with that I can't connect all of them at one time....
... so the only solution is a 4x12... I was in Guitar Center the other day and saw some used inexpensive 4x12s... not at good as the "real" baltic birch... but for the price and for what I'm doing it would be fine... and then just keep the 1x12 cabs if I have to travel light with a single cab....
I would tell any new hobbyist to think long and hard about their first gear purchase... because once they purhase something it sort of locks them into a path that isn't easily changeable unless one you ditch (or sell) the first purchase....
I bought an Avatar 2x12 with a celestion V30 and a G12h100 set up at 4ohms. This cab sounds great and it was very reasonable price wise. I play in a cover band and the versatility of the DT50/HD500 is outstanding. I've gotten so many compliments from other guitarists on my tone selection for the numerous songs we cover and most of these guys are surprised that it's a line6 amp!!!! Now the only thing I need is a JTV59 but that purchase may put me in divorce court.. HAHA!!
Terrific to read a positive post.
The proportion of negative posts, or complaints about one thing or another are far greater than those posting positive ones.
Don't get a divorce buying a POD HD500, put it on time paymentat either zZounds.com, Sweetwater.com, or AmericanMusicalSupply, com These retailers offer anywhere from 3-pay options up to 5-pay. Sometimes even special deals that give 8-pay up to 12-pay. Payment plans are the only way I was able to obtain the gear I have as playing as the only source of income is tenuous at best.
Doing this to save a one lump sum outlay of your hard earned money, and it might even give you a chance to buy your wife something nice so she doesn't feel you're more involved with your music equipment than her.
I was married once a long time ago between 1988 thru 1993. I even had the foresight to write up a pre-nupt and that was a very unpleasant conversation to say the least. It was amazing how something like that, which had nothing to do with my feelings for the woman I loved at that time, caused her to be upset. I think those who get upset about things like that are not just in love with the person. This is just my opinion as I think about it all now. I used to think that love was all that mattered, not who had what in a relationship? Turns out using my brain instead of just my heart was the right thing to do afterall. She was not just in love with me as a person, but at least partly in love with what I had and what it could do for her way of life. I just loved her for being her. now that my life situation is very different than it was then, I've not had much interest from the opposite sex.
I just happened to have a couple of businesses which she did not help me start or help me run at the time I proposed. I loved her, but I had nearly a 1/2 million dollars worth of equipment in my recording/rehearsal studios plus my personal stage and PA gear, as well as all the income my businesses were generating due to my hard work that I could never split with anyone who didn't help it get to that point.
Too bad Line 6 doesn't have Line 6 gear groupies! I'd have to beat them off with a stick!!
Hey - there's another option that should be added to the Line 6 Dream Rig...really awesome, caring, considerate, and musically inclined women!! I wonder if Line 6 could work that out while working on the JTV 1.81 glitch?? ![]()
All the best of continued positive experiences with your gear. Sorry about the side-track of my past love-life.
Take care,
Neal
That's an amazing and heart-felt post...obviously from somebody who has paid their dues...I bet you're a great blues player! Never expected to read something like that on this particular forum, but from an emotional viewpoint it's much more satisfying than just another equipment post could be.
Anyway, back to the main point, I have the DT25 / HD500 combo and am getting ready for my second gig with it tomorrow night with my cover band. It's been an up-and-down experience so far, so many options, and "I know what I want, but I just don't know how to go about gittin it", as Hendrix said.
Like many others, I find virtually all of the factory patches to be useless, but some of the Custom Tone uploads are decent starting points, although I'm finding it still takes a lot of time to dial in something that really sounds good to me. Just too many parameters!
I initially tried the HD500 through the power amp input on my Egnater Tweaker 40 112 combo, and this sounded decent, but it didn't have the "thump" factor going for it. It sounded better than going directly through a PA monitor, to be sure, but it wasn't what I was hoping for. So I splurged and bought the DT25 during the 15% off MF Easter sale. I'm still inside the return period, I think, but I have to make up my mind soon. We'll see how she sounds tomorrow night at the gig. I think I have found a few tones that work well, but the gig is the acid test. I have a clean Fender tone, pushed Fender tone, gritty rhythm distortion, and full-out liquid lead tone. I am using the preamp-only models on the HD500, and I plan to program a couple of alternative banks using the same 4 basic tones, but using different cabs sims, or no cabs. That way I can experiment on the fly while on stage.
I am using a Barden-equipped American Standard Strat, and a Goldtop Les Paul that currently has a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. I am not using any outboard effects pedals, just the HD500 hooked to the DT25 using a standard XLR cable over the the L6 link connection.
I do like a lot of what I'm hearing so far, but I'm not convinced yet that it's worth the $$ outlay, around $1300 total between the HD500 and the DT25, even buying both at a good discount. I gig regularly, and I can fund my equipment purchases that way, but it's still a big $$ outlay, so I expect a large requisite bang-for-the-buck. I do have high hopes though...![]()
Thanks for your very kind words.
You've found some patches that you liked for starters at CustomTone.com Have you tried any of mine specifically designed for the Dream Rig combination?
If you're like myself before Line 6, I was a strict Marshall (starting in 1975 with a new Plexi 50w head w/8x10 Marshall Cab - yep one cab with 8x10) and then had every anniversary head Marshall put out in the anniversary colors starting with the 15th anniversary through the 30th anniversary into standard 1960A or B 4x12 cabs with mostly Les Pauls as my guitars in front. Just a couple of pedals, nothing much more. Then in 2003 I tried a Line 6 Vetta combo and have never looked at any other brand guitar gear since. Then 2006 got me into the Variax guitars with the nicest of the bunch in my opinion, the Model 700. I've now relied so heavily on all the modeling Line 6 gear can do from then through all the new gear now, that I'm "stuck" with never being able to go back to just plug & play. If that was a marketing stradegy - it's one heck of a good one - as you fall in love with the gear, then you depend on the gear and now I really can't do my now typical show without that gear.
Anyway - here's a link to my uploaded patches perhaps there are some there you might like or use to tweak out more patches for your own personal sounds. POD HD500 patches start on page 3, many patches before that are for a JTV guitar. Not too many "typical" ones, but enough variety, I think they work well to help you get started with some pretty decent sounds.

I hope this helps,

Thanks, Neal, I did check out some of your patches and they were good starting points for me. Since I have the DT25, they seemed to require some tweaking to get into the EQ range I was looking for with my specific guitars and given the tones I like. So, I used the HD500/DT25 rig for the second time live last night at a show in Manassas VA. Since I am the sole guitar in this band, I needed a variety of tones across a fairly wide range, plus didn't want to drag around pedals, or a rack. On top of all that, I wanted great sound out of the PA with my two main guitars.
Initial impression from last night is that I was pleased and satisfied with the on-stage tone. While I've gotten decent clean tones onstage before, last night I got the best funky clean tone I think I've ever had on stage, specifically on the Cee Lo Green tune "Forget You". It was awesome! The big test though, for me, is always the high-gain lead tone. I'm picky because I require several elements in order to be happy. I want gain, of course, but I still want a great tone inside the gain structure. It has to scream, but without sounding too course or too middy or muddy, particularly with the bridge humbucker in the Les Paul. You might call it a "sweet scream". The Strat is easier to please, but I generally have not had good luck on stage with the Paul because with practically every other rig, it gets too muddy.
From the viewpoint on stage last night, the lead tone on the Les Paul rocked--seemed to have all the elements I like. Gain but no mud, but not overly bright either. Plenty of sustain and scream. A really classic tone, similar to Neal Schon on "Faithfully" for example, which I've never been able to achieve live before using a Paul.
We had some people recording the show, when I hear what the audience was hearing then I'll know if this is really the solution I'm hoping it'll turn out to be. Forgot to mention, I ran direct into the PA using the XLR out on the back of the DT25. My home testing seemed to indicate that the direct out sounded better than a SM57 dangling in front of the DT25 speaker, which is the standard way the sound guy usually mics my amp.
Thanks, Neal, for all of your incredibly useful tips and tricks. I should mention that I studied your detailed guide to setting up tones on the HD500 and it's been of immense value to me.
Wow - I'm very flattered and humbled that you thought so highly of what I've written to help those get this terrific gear to work for those using it for their specific sound. Wouldn't it be so boring but much easier if we all liked the same thing?? LOL
Did the LP sounds help you out or were those not ones you used from my postings? If you're still lacking in some areas, I've read your post and understand completely what you mean about the LP lead sound you are wanting. If you've not already worked it out to your liking, I think I might have a patch or two not uploaded that might be more what you have described.
These are both modified JTV models, which may or may not actually be Les Paul bridge pick-up guitars, but sound like they are. Plus matching POD HD500 or PRO patches to go into your DT25.
You've already discovered what I did not know about the DT25 vs. the DT50 and the tone adjustments required. My patches are all based on the DT50 L6'd with the DT50 runnning in full power mode. I've not been pleased personally with the low power mode of the DT50 2x12 or 1x12 amps and the "Fletcher-Munson" curve apparently being applied to the tone as the volume level changes. For testing new patches, it's fine since I'm very close to the amp and want to keep my hearing working a bit longer, but for performances...I've not been pleased with that mode.
Thanks again for posting such a very kind assessment of my varied posts and your use of those postings. It means a great deal to me that what I submit is actually helping others get the results they want.
Take care,
Neal
PS - PM me if you want more patches for LP leads or any ther special situation you need to deal with.
Hey, Neal, thanks so much for that offer to help me figure out more useful patches! I will definitely take you up on that, right now I'm still trying to figure out some basic concepts about tone creation on this rig. So far, I started with your patch MerlinFL_POD HD500_WHAMMY PEDAL_ and gravitated towards the Treadplate Pre with no cab. I like having the gain backed off about halfway on the preamp, so that there's still plently of gain when I use the Les Paul with the Super Distortion in the bridge, but at the same time, it's not harsh, and it has that "sweet scream" I was talking about. I also programmed in a pedal-activated low-gain Tube Screamer in front of the amp for an extra lead boost when I need it. I also use a little analog chorus and set up a couple of different pedal-activated delays and that was pretty much my high-gain tone for the live shows. Sounds incredible with the Strat and the Paul. Kicking in the digital delay model is really fun, and the Screamer is there when/if I need more gain. I also have another patch with Tube Drive, and one with a Tube Compressor in front instead of the Screamer. They all seem to have their uses. The differences are interesting, with the Strat, there's more clarity and chime and you really hear the strings ring, and with the Paul you get a thicker, honkier scream, but it's still not muddy at all.
I also used your patch MerlinFL_POD HD500_FENDER FANATI as a starting point for clean tones.
I mentioned that the show on Saturday 5/5 was recorded using a hi-def Zoom recorder, so that I can hear the tone the audience was getting. I finally had a chance to start reviewing the recordings. Usually I cringe at some point while listening to the various tones I was getting on different songs, but this was different--it just sounded awesome, pretty much across the board. I found myself thinking, this sounds like the radio. And this was using the XLR direct out on the DT25 right into the board, no mic. The direct out totally works like it should. Also, when I dropped the volume down for rhythm parts, the tone stayed intact and didn't get dark. Hence the rhythm parts sounded just like they were supposed to. When I pushed the volume pedal down for leads, it just sounded amazing.
So THANK YOU VERY MUCH! I am still in the honeymoon period with the HD500/DT25 rig, but I already see that I am getting some really cool tones that I simply was never able to achieve before. And I have barely scratched the surface of what this thing can do.
I do have a question though, I have not been able to get any dual tone patches to work on the DT25, I always seem to get only the AMP A tone out of the HD500 unless that amp is off, in which case I get the AMP B tone that's set up manually on the DT25. There doesn't seem to be a way to get both the AMP A and AMP B tones off the HD500 into the DT25. But that's fine with me, a single amp tone that sounds great can rock my world adequately!
The next show is this Sunday 5/13, at a large outdoor venue, so this will be yet another interesting test of the new rig :-)
Cheers, Pete
PS: Line 6 Monkey just told me there is a new update for the HD500, version 4.2.5.4 Any idea what's new in that? I delayed installing it until after the next show since I don't want any surprises when I am finally starting to get the thing pogrammed with tones I like.
Hi pbecker314,
sounds goood. Can you please post your patches here.
Thanks a lot.

#thanks but I was also interested in the patches of Pete
You're very welcome and glad some of my patches originally created back on my Vetta are still helpful with the new POD HD gear.
Unless the DT25 works differently than the DT50 which I have. You should be able to get dual amp tone from the single channel. I'm not at all certain how this can happen - especially if the amps are very different - but if you have the L6 link output set to Left/Right for Audio, it probably has defaulted to Amp 1 = A & Amp 2 = B, try either having the audio output be just left or right, or try switching the default settings of amp 1 & 2 to = Amp A on both. See what that does for you. Personally I've honestly never been able to figure out how one amp that is mono, be able to produce dual amp patches.
Starting the my original Vetta - that amp was stereo, but you could move the amps around in the stereo image or have both come out equal in both speakers. I can only presume., not certain, but only presume that something similar to this will happen with the DT amps. With the 4 topologies, and two different pre settings and well as two different output settings, I'm not at all sure how one amp would interpret two amps. Perhaps it will "choose" one set of physical characteristics that should make the best of both amps chosen?
Didn't know about any HD500 update - I'll go check it out. There should be notes written with the update to explain what situations or bugs it would be addressing. If there is nothing written, then I can only suggest to ask either a POD HD500 expert, or one of the Line 6 employees like Hugo or Tony who monitor the boards more often than most.
Glad you're pleased with anything I've done to help get you where you want to be with your gear.
I've just come from reading a thread entitled perhaps you might copy and repost you're situation as apparently this person has been frustrated for year with his gear and not getting any sounds he is happy with and has chosen to sell all of it for a Fender Twin.

Thanks, it looks like the latest update is not going to change any of the tones. It apparently removes a default setting of the "+18 boost" which apparently is only any issue for people using the HD500 for direct recording using a DAW.
I'm continuing to fine tune patches for the show on Sunday. So far this rig is doing want I want/need it to do, so I do plan on keeping it. Comparing it with my previous Egnater rig, it's no contest. The HD500/DT25 is putting me right in the ballpark on many tones that I could not get at all (let alone at reasonable volume levels) with the old rig.
Cheers, Pete
Hi Pete,
can you please share your patches
Thanks in advance and good luck for the gig

Played an outdoor show at a restaurant in VA located right on the Potomac River. Huge crowd! I used the DT25 direct out right into the PA via a standard XLR cable. Monitored directly through the DT25 speaker, didn't send the guitar through the stage monitors. Sounded good on stage. I wasn't sure what it sounded like in the mains til I heard the playback several days later. Sounded really good with both the Strat and the Paul. The lead tone was the best I've ever obtained, at least based on the playback I've heard from my shows over the past 5 years. I ended up using mainly the Fender Bassman tone, with either Overdrive or Classic Distortion added, plus digital delay and a little bit of chorus. In the 4th set, I played only the Strat, through the Fender Deluxe tone, with Overdrive up front for leads. I got a lot of complements on that tone in particular, bunch of people were freaking out over that tone. On the playback, it definitely sounded good to me, was the perfect tone for Sweet Home Alabama for example. Great combination of twang with some sustain, but clear and not harsh. I actually preferred the Bassman lead tone on the playback, but the Deluxe clean tone was awesome. I am still exploring tones with this amazing DT25/HD500 system, not quite ready to post patches yet, I want to do more exploring first. Loving it so far! I can't picture going back to any of my previous rigs after this. Could turn out to be the new gold standard! :-O
