Updates

Hello all.

 

Being quite new to all this i need answers to a few questions on the update thing for the 300 and 400 just released.

 

1) Does it get rid of the amps i have on there already or are they added, if so where do they go?.

2) Will it mess up the custom tones i've downloaded and mess up presets i've changed and saved?

 

Sorry for what may be very simple questions but like i say i'm new to this and have only had my 300 a couple of months.

    1. No, this is in addition to the amp models and FX models you have already...New amp models appear after the Angel...You must put the 300 in Edit mode, and use the data pot to select the new models as the model selector stops at the Angel.

     

    2. the update will only overwrite presets if you select the option during the update...The tones of your presets may change a bit as a result of the update, usually for the better, but you ususally have to touch them up a little...

     

    Just backup what you have before you update and you can generally get back to where you were or pretty close...

    Any time there's an update, I've noticed the patches change enough for me to rework them. It's not unique to line 6 products. Most modelers that get updated don't guarantee that the patches will sound the same. Actually, as you upgrade there's almost always a prompt to click yes to agree to a statement that clearly states that your patches might sound different and if you still like to proceed witht the update.  Still the amps should sound the same unless the update specifically has it in the release note that the specific amp was modified, but since a patch is a combination of effects, there's more chance of those types of patches to alter even though some patches might still sound the same.

      Angel? not sure about this.

       

      So if i say no to preset updates i just get the amps. So is it worth getting the updates? think i might just leave it as it is. Thanks for your help.

        As spaceatl says:

         

        Use HD Edit to backup all of your patches before you upgrade !!!

         

        That way:  If you have a problem or you do not like the changes that have been made to your unit, you can restore the old firmware and your old patches/presets back to where you are today.

        I think it's always worth getting the Updates because you can always rework you patches. What's interesting about this is that sometimes amp models are modified by the updates (you should know which ones as the update release note should list it). When that happens the updated amp model might lose it's appeal to some. Prime example is that in the early firmware the Uber was very well liked by many players and a later update changed it that I know some people sold their PODs because it was their favorite amp. Line 6 later brought that original Uber and called it line 6 Electric. In this recent update I don't recall any amps were modified so this is not even an issue.

         

        I recommend that you update and if you notice that your patches are changed and you can't rework them to sound the same or to your liking then you can always roll back the update, it's not like you're stuck with it!

          There are 2 kind of backup files with HD300 EDIT:

          1. Single Presets

          2. Bundles (Complete Setlists with all presets)

           

          I'd backup them both. Each firmware holds its factory presets/ (one setlist). Sometimes the number of presets increase because of new amp sims. If I only saved bundles, it would also overwrite the new factory presets while restoring.

          So after firmware update do the factory reset (a must like pedal calibration or the device might have strange behavior!), then have a look if there are new factory presets.

          Finally restore what is needed:

          - No new factory presets -> Restore bunde file - done!

          - New factory presets -> Restore your presets to empty presets as long as there is enough space. You can also overwrite / replace factory presets you don't prefer with your own presets.

           

          For me, all firmware updates made the device sound better or made it more interesting / give them more features - but as DeanDinosaur said: There might be a change in existing sounds.

        Definitely yes, regardless of any amount of tiny work you have to do to your presets to get them sounding right again (assuming you even have to). You will be missing out on a lot of nice new stuff. He who dares, wins.

    Many thanks to you all for the great advice. I will go for the updates. I'll let you know if i **** it up or not .
