Which effects units support JTV?

I bought a used JTV-69 on eBay and I'm waiting for it to arrive. There are also a ton of Line 6 multi-effects units for sale, is there a list somewhere of the ones that both power and support the JTV?. I know the HD500 does but which others do?

    Hi Biggs,

You will need to get a unit that has VDI connection (Variax Digital Interface). Pod X2 Live and Pod X3 Live are the other units I know of that have this (as well as the respective rack mount Pro versions of these).I recommend  the HD 500 though as you will end up getting the most out of that. I know that the kidney bean desktop HD also has a VDI as does the rack mount HD Pro. I hope this helps.

Hi DrFunk. Hope you don't mind me making a minor correction - the Pod HD Desktop does not have a VDI connection. And I think you mean the Pod XT rather than X2?

But I agree overall. I believe the multi-FX POD series that support Variax are the XT Live, X3 Live/Pro, and HD500/Pro. Here's the Legacy Products page for individual product specs for the XT and X3 series, as well as others.

AFAIK, the XT and X3 series will power the JTV, but will not allow control over JTV models like the HD series will. I've never plugged my JTV into my XT Live, just my HD500.

Minor correction. The X3L at the latest firmware level does allow you to control the JTV with a VDI connection. I gig regularly with my X3L and JTV59 and my X3L controls all my guitar model changes.

but not the alt tunings.... i suspect (dont have my x3 any longer, so i Can't be sure)

i think that the hd500/hdpro are the only "full control" variax pods (mags/models+alt tunings, and parameter control)

          Zap --

You're right, the X3L controls the patch changes, but not alt tunings or JTV knobs as parameter controls of the JTV. To control models for alt tunings, you need to set & save specially tuned models to call up before hand. The other gotcha is you cannot set up the model changes within the editing software "Gearbox" -- you have to do it manually from the X3L phyisical controls on the pedal. The HD500 can set up all these things from the "HD500 Edit" software, and set the tuning per model without the need for storing any specially tuned models ahead of time... So in my experience these things made the JTV/HD500 combo a killer along with the new modeling. The HD Pro can do all this as far as I know, but I've never messed with one first hand. I've kept my X3L as a backup for my HD500.

with my variax 600, and x3 live i was able to force models using gearbox... can't recall any specifics, but I'm pretty sure i was able to do this. wouldn't think this would go away with JTV.

you may be thinking of the XT, which you could use line6 edit (or the hardware) to assign variax models but not gearbox

Re: Which effects units support JTV?

Well, I never got it to work properly with Gearbox. Went through every control option I could. I found I could make it force the model when I set it up with the on-pedal interface. I think this has been brought up in the forums before. I have my X3L, Gearbox & JTV soft & firmware (respectively) up to date, and it has always been a no go unless I set it via the pedal itself once I set & saved the patch. Then just to try it, I hooked up my Variax 300, and could set it with Gearbox, and it worked as expected. Can't remember if the software was specifically aware that the JTV was a JTV, but it was aware of the 300. I could always get it to switch the models on the 300 when set up with Gearbox. The X3L pedal WAS aware that the guitar was a JTV, so I always did it that way.

The HD500 & HD500 Edit software has never been a problem in that respect. The X3L was just tedious, but worked once I found the way it worked. By the time I got my JTV, my XTL was toast, so never was able to play with that to see what it could or couldn't do concerning the JTV.

Re: Which effects units support JTV?

Although the X3L firmware got updated to support the JTV as far as dual channels (mags and models) and recognising the JTV, I don't believe GEARBOX ever caught up. I think they pulled the plug on support before they updated it, so it does not provide the extra input options that you can get on the X3L itself on the latest firmware.

I know that my X3L recognises both my V700 and my JTV and remembers the model settings for both for each patch - so for one X3L patch I could have the JTV set to Tmod-1 and for the V700 have it set to Spank-1 for example.  So maybe the GEARBOX software only allows you to update the V700 or Variax version 1 settings within the X3L, and the JTV settings can't be manipulated because they just never got around to updating the GEARBOX software before they pulled support?      Only Line 6 will know for sure.

Re: Which effects units support JTV?

Correct Zap.  Sorry for not being clearer - the X3L can only control model patch changes on the JTV automatically and supports model and mags on different channels  - it does not support all the new controls introduced with JTV flash v1.82 such as alt-tunings and assigning knobs as controllers but then again that was specifically updates for the HD500 - as we know the X3L has been out of support for some years but fortunately it did overlap with the introduction of the JTV so its last firmware release does at least recognise a JTV and allows model patch changes, and allows distinguishing between the mags and the models.
