Using L6 Link does anyone use the HD500 only for effects and no amp models

Or can this only be done by putting the PodHD500 physically wired into the loop of the amp.
I have a single button channel switch for the DT50 head, would this still work so I could use the DT50 purely as a dual channel amp? Even though the Link is connected.
Would both pre amp channels operate properly with my switch and would the PodHD 500 via the L6Link act purely as a means to access post pre amp effects?
I suppose I could experiment at home over the next few days but wondered if any of you guys do or have done this successfully.
The only reason I ask is that I prefer to use my own wah and overdrive pedal before the pre amp and use a volume pedal and EQ pedal in the loop of the PodHD500 post effects in the signal chain.
The only advantage of doing this is can see is there is only one digital cable (L6 Link) between my pedal board and the amp instead of trailing send and return (LOOP) cables from the back of the amp and having an output cable going to the front of the amp.
Any thoughts please
