recording vocals clean or not clean?

im using a UX2 through PODFARM 2 along with a SM57 to record my vocals via Reaper. Im having trouble getting the tone i want, and ive already shot myself in the foot by adding too much stuff to my best take, and now im stuck with the tone it seems. So im wondering whats the best practice for this line of thought? How can i safely record vocals into Reaper, with least amount of FX, to where i will be able to play around with it after the fact, but not so much FX that its beyond tweaking? If im not making sense its because im brand new at this.

When i say FX, i am only referring to reverb and compression, and de-esser. Ive either got my tone too thin, or too much bass. I either sound like an old UHF TV channel with a weak signal back in the 80's, or i sound like your in the bathroom at a bar, haha.  Just looking for basic input, im not professional or anything.

Assuming you have a the PF farm plug-in, I would capture wet and dry simultaneously. Enable all 4 of the UX's inputs in Reaper. In PF you can configure the sends in the Mixer view.

That way you have a dry track and can tweak all you want.

Dry is no effects, Wet is with effects.

In Reaper I arm 2 stereo tracks to record, one captures 1 and 2 and the other captures 3 and 4.

When you arm a track to record, there should be pairs of send available (1/2, 3/4), if there is not, you need to enable them in Audio Reaper's preferences. Make sure your device is Line6 ASIO UX2.

In the PF mixer configure 2 of the 4 sends to record unprocessed and the other 2 of 4 sends to record Tones A & B.

Let me know if you get it sorted out, if not I can provide screenshots, but I might not be able to do it until late Friday or Sunday.

I've heard the song, but I don't sing, so I don't have any suggestions on crafting tones for vocals.

You don't have to record the wet also, I usually do for guitar just to remind myself later what sound I was going for.
