would headphones benefit from a headphone amp?

and what about an external DAC to pair with the headphone amp?

    Not enough that you would ever notice in a level-matched double-blind test.

     

    Edit: unless there's something goofy going on with your headphones and they can't be driven properly as is.

    With firmware 1.40 there was a nasty bug that caused a very loud squeal for some users when certain changes were made on the pod.  This is long since fixed but the noise was apparently shatteringly loud and was not related directly to the master volume level.

     

    Some folks pointed out at the time that one way to reduce the impact of the problem and protect your ears would be to use a headphone amp. and set the Max volume on that to something safe,

     

    Just something to consider.
