I need to get this recording stuff straightened out

Okay I noticed that when I go into Reaper and look at Audio Device Settings, if I choose EMU for my driver, then I cannot go into Line 6 Audio and Midi Devices and adjust the record level send and expect it to do anything cuz it doesn't. If I choose HD Pro as my driver then the record level slider in Audio and Midi Devices works to set my level on my track. Problem is I'm getting some type of distortion. If I choose EMU and then set input first to be 5 SPDIF/LR and input last as 6 SPDIF/LR then I get good recordings with no distortion and I get a normal looking wave pattern (see screenshot).
But if I set audio device driver to HD Pro and then first input to be input 1 and last input to be input 2 I do not get a normal looking wave pattern (see screenshot). Plus I can hear obvious distortion. Although the record send slider works if the device driver is set this way.
So can anyone shed some light on all this? It's not my cup of tea really as I don't know much about recording. I'm mainly a guitar player.
Is there a way to get normal looking wave patterns with no distortion and to be able to still set the record send slider the way I want?
I'll try to attach some screenshots.
looking at your screenshot #2, I see you have the Reaper first and last inputs both set to POD HD Pro input 1.. so probably you are duplicating your signal at your DAW input, and you get distortion..
I think the correct setting should be as in the pic below here (in my case with a HD500):

and also, it's better if you don't tick the "Request sample rate" if you want a better sound quality, since by default the HD is operating at 48000 Hz
Okay I followed your instructions and I still get distortion plus a wave pattern that looks a little odd. I've attached a screenshot.
Check your Line 6 Audio-MIDI Devices control panel item. On the Recording and Input tab, make sure the +18db usb boost is not checked. If it was checked, you may need to boost your record level slider again to compensate.
It's not checked.
sometimes the audio connection behaves in a bad way when you connect some audio devices to a usb port different from that used during the driver installation..
it happened to me, and when I reconnected the device back to the original usb port everything worked well again..

another thing that may cause problems is the asio buffer memory setting, if set to a improper value for your pc power..
give a look below here:

PS.
I would try also a different DAW software to see if it has the same problem
I raised the buffer to 1024. No difference. USB port is the same. When installing the HD Pro Driver I already had the USB cable connected between the computer and the POD. I merely had the POD shut off. When the screenshot told me to plug in the USB cable, I merely turned the power on.
So using the EMU you get good recording with no distortion. Why not use the EMU then? Am I missing something that makes you want or need to use the PODs interface?
If I use the EMU Driver I can't use the Line 6 Record Send Slider to control the level going into the track. I'd really like to be able to control the recording level that way if I could, cuz if I do it that way, it does not affect my guitar volume in my headphones.
I'm not familiar with Reaper or your setup, but I know that the sample rate of the Pod and your DAW have to match or you get bad distortion. IOW, if your Pod is set to 48khz, then your project in Reaper must be set the same. I'm not sure if this helps, but it's another possibility.
I tried both suggestions and neither makes a difference. I still get that bloated looking wave pattern and you can hear distortion.
uninstall all of your drivers and start over....the only reason it wouldn't work is a fault driver....I use my HD500 into reaper daily with no issues, so I think it has to be the driver.
I reinstalled the Line 6 Driver the old fashioned way (not using Monkey). No difference.
The only things that I can think of: in screen shot #2
1-Untick or remove the check from "request sample rate at 44khz"
2-Untick "allow project to override device.."
3-If you want to use the POD USB then Disconnect the SPDIF of your pod that's going into the sound card to eliminate any confusion with sampling rate and only connect the 1/4 out of the pod to your sound card (EMU) or whatever device mixer etc that you want to use for monitoring.

at this point I guess the problem is due to a conflict between your EMU pc audio interface and the POD HD Pro when it is used as an audio interface ..
a possible solution could be to disable the EMU audio interface from the windows device manager..
I believe I tried that also to no avail. Oh well...
in my opinion remain 2 possibilities:
- try another DAW software, like cubase or nuendo
- try another PC
Maybe I will try a newer version of Reaper. I'm not exactly using a real recent version. And maybe I'll download a trial version of some other DAW software. Although I gotta tell you, Reaper is really easy to use and functions very well.
Okay a thought just crossed my mind. Maybe it's wrong to expect that I could use the POD HD Pro to play through and use as a sound card driver at the same time. I mean I'm playing a preset with gain and distortion and delay etc. and since I'm playing through all that maybe that is what is affecting the record signal going into Reaper. If I'm playing through a high gain preset of course the recorded signal will be effected. Know what I'm saying?
I don't know if I'm correct though. It's just a thought that entered my mind.

no, it has nothing to do with what you're saying..
the pod must be able to do this and more ..
yours is a compatibility issue, but we don't know with what: hardware?, drivers?, software? ..
I believe if you tried to connect to another computer would not have the same problems..
Well I currently don't have a guitar to mess with (until Monday), so I tried Cubase Elements 6 Trial Version and a mic. It appeared I got things working okay. I was messing with those three buttons next to the XLR mic input and those had an influence on the wave pattern I saw. I then switched to Reaper and it appeared to work okay there also. I suspect that perhaps the reason it didn't work and my wave pattern was all bloated and distorted is because I got something set wrong in my gear, maybe my POD. Perhaps some kind of mismatch.
When I get a guitar again I'll continue to experiment.
Well I got my guitar and I've been experimenting. I armed a track and hit Record and played with the Pad button next to the guitar input. Made no difference. Weird. When I tried it with a mic it looked like I got the distortion down and the waveform looked normal. I can't seem to do that when I record my guitar though. I tried different sample rates. No difference. The waveform is still bloated and it doesn't look normal.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
