thank you very much for the valuable information
to make things even easier and painless you could use this:
it changes the shape and polarity of the DC output Plug
but it needs a 2.1mm Barrel Plug as an input!
the green one has a 2.5mm Barrel Plug as an output
or even better this:

What I did was take an broken lamp cord, and cut it down to around 8 inches, then wire it to a replacement extension cord female end with outlets that face sideways, so the plug wasn't sticking out a a right angle. Velcro/tape that up so it doesn't get unplugged and lost, and good to go! Fits on any power strip now

Good idea. I was doing something similar. Shortly after I bought my HD500, I went to the Home Depot and bought an inexpensive extension cord that had three outlets. But I never liked the idea of having that sitting aroudn because stepping on it would bend the prongs and everyone is always stepping on cords and plugs etc.
If they stop on the new power supply, it will not likely break. The two heat sinks inside fill up the sides of the brick, and it's pretty sturdy.
I'm very happy with the solution.
