XLR vs 1/4"

So I have a Pod HD 500 and pair of studio speakers. I initially tried to connect them using the XLR connections but basically got hardly any sound. Eventually I tried 1/4" cables in the appropriate sockets and it sounds fine. Is this meant to be the case? Or should there be a way to connect the Pod and speakers through the XLRs giving me a better sound over the 1/4"?
Thanks
G
The XLR outs are at mic level and the 1/4" outs are at line level, so that would explain the difference in levels you're hearing. The XLR outs are really designed to be plugged into a channel strip on a mixer with a mic preamp. There's nothing wrong with using the 1/4" outs. They're unbalanced, so using them with a long cable run could add noise, but you should be fine plugging into your studio speakers with them.
You can get a line level out of the XLR's (turn the master output all the way up and often requires some mixer manipulation) but it is my understanding that it's true the XLR's are designed for mic level. Is there an official word on this somewhere?
On this chart, it says the XLRs on the HD500 are mic level:

I don't think it's specifically stated in the manuals anywhere, but Line 6 did confirm it here:
Thank you sir.
