XLR to 1/4" jack adapter ?

I need to convert AKG D5' dynamic mic which has an xlr connector to a male 1/4" jack in order to use it with one of my amp without any xlr input.
I know there are passive adapters doing that but I'm wondering the amount of loss of signal strenght and quality that will result.
Do you know any way to reduce that signal degradation to a minimum ?
Once a vendore told me to use a DI box but I don't know how it can help.
thanks
Microphones need a preamp. What amp are you plugging into? If it is an instrument amp, you will get a lousy sound. Is this an old PA amp with only 1/4" inputs? If so, a passive adapter will work but when you go from balanced XLR to unbalanced 1/4" (2 conductor), there will be more noise in the sound as well.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
