DT-25 Amp configuration volume measurements

On my quest to get a better handle on tone volume leveling I measured the sound pressure levels of different DT-25 amp configurations when used with HD500 preamps. I used the HD looper to generate a sequence of medium fast 8th notes of some pitch and then setup the sound pressure meter to use an A weighted frequency sensitivity (emulating human ear) and an averaging measurement method [Leq], which gives you an 'Equivalent Continuous Sound Level' to factor out sound level changes due to playing multiple notes with slightly different force. Based on several measurement runs through the amps and using different preamp settings and guitar models I suspect that there will be some variance of +/- 1 dB or even more. Maybe some of you have or want to do similar things and can report back with your experience.
I found the Class A, Pentode, Type III configuration to be the loudest and the table below lists how far off the other amp configurations ended up in my measurements. Interrestingly there is a spread of about 13.5 dB, which most people will probably judge as 1.5 times volume difference. My average level when measuring was about 90 dB Leq.
| Amp Config | Leq Delta [dB] |
|---|---|
| A/B, P, I | -10.4 |
| A/B, P, II | -9.2 |
| A/B, P, III | -5.4 |
| A/B, P, IV | -7.9 |
| A/B, D, I | -13.6 |
| A/B, D, II | -13.1 |
| A/B, D, III | -12.2 |
| A/B, D, IV | -11.9 |
| A, P, I | -5.9 |
| A, P, II | -4.2 |
| A, P, III | 0 |
| A, P, IV | -3.2 |
| A, D, I | -9.5 |
| A, D, II | -8.7 |
| A, D, III | -8.1 |
| A, D, IV | -7.2 |
I would expect that one has to compensate by the delta dB on the mixer to balance tone volume if the only thing one does is switching to a different amp configuration, e.g., if you started with A, P, III and want to go to A, D, III you'd have to raise the mixer gain by about 8 dB to remain at the same outputvolume level. It would be interesting to know how this works (if at all) for other players and whether there are not some other factors that need to be considered to make this a useful table.

Did you accept the default dial position for each amp?
I used 1 HD 500 Preamp (BF Dbl Vib) with 3 different Drive settings (0, 40, 90) and only changed the power amp configuration on the DT-25. All of my Preamp tone stack controls were set to 50%, Channel volume adjusted to level the volume for all 3 Drive settings. So basically I tried to only change the frequency content of the signal driving the DT-25. Given that I checked only 1 Preamp I did not do the possible frequency content range of the HD 500 any justice and thus I assume that my numbers above can't be taken as hard guidance but just as a starting point on what to expect when the only thing you change is the DT-25 Power Amp configuration. I tried to balance a couple of the configurations and dialing in the correction on the mixer seems to do the trick for me.
Hope I got your question right,
Martin
