I suppose I should know this but I remember reading that if you turn off trails, then it's in TB....true? sure would be nice
Thanks
What exactly are you wanting to know? It's all software, so there's no signal loading or tone suck to worry about. All the trails option does is leave delay and verb decay playing while you switch to another patch. It doesn't make any tonal difference if you leave it on or turn it off.
In theory it may not effect the tone, but certainly it does, in my opinion. perhaps it's just the long struggle between eq and levels but I get more rich, harmonic punch when not using the HD500 than plugging directly into my amp. too bad because i've gotten used to the distortion models and i really like the delays but the sucker sucks my tone. enought to where I may be finished with the unit, opting to get some Caitlinbread pres instead or additional MTS modules. or even just get one nice delay and call it......
it is useful to go to practice with only the HD and plufg into an amp FXloop there......oh well.
Are you using the correct output mode? If you're using the HD500 for effects only, you'll want to be in studio direct rather than one of the front modes. I wouldn't say that there's no tone loss with the HD500, but I don't believe it should be entirely awful. It is awful if you have it in one of the front modes, though.
I use the Combo Power amp with 4CM. no it;s not awful, it's way better without it, so much so that it really don;t want to use it, but the effects are so plentiful and handy.
I'll try the Studio mode
Thx
nah, selling for an Echorec, Dirty Little Secret and Tone bender. I'll send my Tremolo to Keeley. I love the HD for what it can do but the killing of harmonic fullness is not good. Maybe the next version will nail it. I think the product is great for many things, just can't aford to have unused stuff and I've put so much into my amp, I need it to respond like it should. if I were a metal player I think I'd keep it
thanks for al the help
anyone knows someone who wants a clean unit in perfect working order, mine's 350 plus shipping with paypal gift or it goes to Ebay
That's not true. There's no true bypass mode on the HD500. The trails option just determines if there are trails when you turn effects off within a patch (there's no spillover between presets no matter what you have this setting at).
I thought that 'trails' in the global settings related to the FX Loop return. Basically, with trails = on, the FX loop return stays on even when the patch is changed. This allows Delays in the loop to ring out.
Dont get hung up on buffering and bypass though. There are good and bad buffers out there and the ones in the HD are pretty good. True bypass is not always better. With long stage cable runs it is usually better to have some buffering in the circuit. Bob Bradshaw (pedalboard builder to the stars) uses buffers in most cases and is pretty clear on his reasons for this ... which are good ones! It does relate to the effects return, but it affects the tails of the other effects, too.
Per the Advanced Guide:
• Trails (Knob 4): When set to “On,” allows the echo repeats and/or decay of Delay and Reverb FX to continue when the Model is toggled Off. With the Trails option “Off” the decay is muted instantly when toggling the Model Off. This setting is saved per Preset.
• The FX Loop also utilizes Trails - bypassing the FX Loop with this feature enabled causes the Return to remain active while the Send is shut Off.
• The Trails feature does not provide a “spillover” of the FX decay when changing Presets.
Interesting. I didn't appreciate that it affected the built-in effects also. I shall have to give it a try.
The "bypass" I know of is in the Tuner Mode...option 2 allows a "bypass" or "mute" of the HD500 when the Tuner is selected. (I usually use the "mute" option)
