Hello all! well i just bought a line6 podhd500 because i heard nothing but great things about it. after buying this thing i've probly never been so frustrated in my life trying to figure out how something works lol. i've only been playing guitar for 3 years and just now forming a band with a few friends, which is going pretty good. the problem is i've never had any background in audio and i have no clue what to do with this thing. i have a marshall vintage modern 2266c combo 50w tube amp with a stevie ray vaughan sig strat. how do i use this thing with my amp? i've been nothing but reading and keep stumbling upon the 4 cabliung system through the fx loop in my amp? is that the way to go? also it seems every one on this site uses the hd500 through a PA system and not even using an amp? i dont get how that would work. i curenty just have my pod hooked up to my amp through the rightmono 1/4 out and the guitar into the guitar in. ive set up lots of patches with the computer editing program but i cant use any of th HD modeling with my amp cuz it sounds all scratchy and shitty. also i tried to plug in my pod to the pa system of our band, i went to the mixing board via a mic cord through the XLR output and that just sounded horrible. i'm pretty close to just returning this thing because i feel i just dont have the audio background to be using this thing and it seems like a waste of good equiptment to me. it does sound not bad through my amp when i disable the hd modeing and use the pedals affects through my amp. i know its a lot of questions but im sick of reading a 300 page manual, it might as well be in french because i dont understand it. thanks for any input, its very appreciated!!,

Many have felt the same way, it's different to other effects racks I've used as well.
You can still use it to plug from 1/4 out straight into your amp and if that's what you're used to, do that for a while till you have time to experiment further.
Keep in mind, most people use amp simulators so they don't have to use amps and can plug straight into a desk, PC, PA, etc. but that doesn't mean you can't amplify the effect through an amp and get a good sound.
Go to the Customtone page and download some patches, see if you can get some better tones.

There are several questions in here. Here's a video about how to properly setup the 4 cable system

Look at this as well

Check your output section to see what your setup is. Is it Direct Studio? ComboFrt or Amp or StackFrt or Amp.
Are you using Full or Preamp for the Amp Type?
For how you're setup now your output should be ComboFrt and I think you should try using the Preamps for the Amp Type. This would be the text book setup for your particular situation. However I would try all options. Start with seeing what the difference between Full and Preamp is. Then try all the output options. Once you've exhausted all that, try the 4 cable method. Also make sure you're not overdriving the amp with the 300's output (master volume to the left of the unbalanced ouptuts) and that the Marshall's preamp is set really clean. I'd say have both body and detail set at about 9 o'clock. Then try just going from the 300 to your FX returns. This bypasses the Marshalls preamp so you're only going through the power amp. You would then have set ComboAmp as your 300 output but again try all of them. I think this will work out better for you. I wish I could be there it would be much faster to go through everything. But for now try these things. I hope it gives you a breadcrumb trail as far as what to do.
The vast majority of HD500 users love the box.
However it is not that easy to operate it or the setup and control of it without reading the manual and spending some time 'tweeking' it.
Hopefully before getting to frustrated, you'll find some presets in the CustomTone site (link shown above) that will give you some audio confidence in it.
I've had mine (output set to line) plugged into a Marshall with it's gain all the way down (just using tone and master volume) and it sounded great.
