Spider Valve 212 solo boost via XLR out

Does anyone know if you use the XLR out directly to your mixing board (instead of micing your cabinet) if when you hit another patch that you've eq'd slightly different and saved at a slightly higher volume, will the higher volume... come through the xlr out to the mixing board?

(I've only owned this for 1 day and the first time I'll have a chance to try this in a PA will be live next weekend)

Thanks

Re: Spider Valve 212 solo boost via XLR out

I have also just bought Spider Valve and had the same questions (and more) about whether, and how to use the XLR out or mic up the amp when playing live.

If you look at the signal routing diagram in the manual, it implies that the XLR out signal has not gone through the valve preamp or amp stage, from which I assume that the XLR out is taking a more "synthetic" output signal.

The implications of this also worry me - does it mean that all the overdrive distortion and amp simulation is done in complete isolation from the tubes? If so, the tubes would seem to be just a marketing gimmick.

Having said that, it does sound good, but maybe I should have bought a lighter and cheaper non-valve version...

Do Line6 people monitor these posts? It would be good to get a reply from them.

    (I have a Mk1 spider Valve 112).

Re: Spider Valve 212 solo boost via XLR out

I think I have the answer now...

According the FAQ for the MkII:

Q: Does the XLR output still send signal when the amplifier is on standby?

A: In some cases yes, in some no.  Spider Valve MkII actually has two different modes of Direct Out, which can be found in the SETUP menu in Edit Mode. They are Studio and Performance. Studio mode is a traditional, DSP POD-style output with speaker simulation and will function when the amplifier is in standby mode. In contrast, Performance mode takes a tap off the output transformer, then goes through the speaker simulation before going through the Direct Out. This allows the tubes to interact with the DSP, and because the amp has to be on to allow this to happen, there will be no signal at the XLR output in standby if Performance mode is selected.

But according to the FAQ for the MkI

Q: Does the XLR output still send signal when the amplifier is on standby?

A:  The XLR Direct Out (which is a POD-style output with speaker simulation) will function when the amplifier is in standby mode.

In other words, on a Mark1 the signal that comes out of the XLR has gone nowhere near the Tubes.

whereas for the MkII they have obviously improved this so that somehow the tubes do have an effect on the sound that is coming out of the XLR.

Solo Bost, as it happens at the beginning of the signal, should still have an effect on what you hear out of the XLR, master volume and presence only affect the Tube section of the the amp. I'm not sure about channel volume, but I'm guessing that happens in the digital preamp, so will be refelected in the XLR output.

to be absolutely sure, I plan to mic up the amp, so that what I hear is what the audience hears.
