Hey guys,
Just finished up a new track and thought I'd post it to get some feedback.
All the live tracks were recorded through the UX1, I love that little thing!

I look forward to your comments!
Thanks,

Just listening on Reverbnation as it's better quality but in saying that it sounds good on Youtube.Great composition and perfomance.Drums could do with a bit more interest and also the reverb becomes a little annoying.Try rolling off the reverb e.g use the touch of the damping option in the VST you are using. Then the metallic sounds of the hi-hats trials won't be as oppressive and you can afford to drop their volume a little.Hi-hats are a pain for causing a crushing sound that bleeds over other instruments if not treated right.
If you have used the reverb on the complete kit it's sometimes better to send the kick drum out on it's own and just have a little bit less than the rest of the kit if possible.
I'm a Reaper user.Best recording software around for the money IMHO ![]()
Still a great composition IMHO ![]()
Hey, thanks for the feedback!
I have to agree with you on the drums being boring. I used a vst program for them, so it's kinda hard to be spontaneous and creative when you're pounding on a keyboard lol. When you mentioned the reverb being overbearing, did you mean the whole track or just the drums? And EQwise I made the mistake of mixing everything through one pair of monitors, plus after listening to the track over 500 times you kinda loose the sense of what sounds right and what doesn't, that's why I posted the song on here just to get a second opinion and learn what to fix next time!
So thanks for your advice, I appreciate it ![]()
P.S. Reaper really is the best, so powerful and efficient. I switched from cubase and haven't looked back since!
Again I think you and the song are superb. It is just a bit too much reverb on the drums and some EQing. It's also a great production job.I now exactly what you mean about listening to a song too much. It's easy to get ,"Audio Fatigue".I walk away when I'm near to completion and make a cup of tea or something to distract myself when the song is playing as if I was casually listening to radio. Then if anything annoying in the mix/composition sticks out it usually shows up because I'm not thinking about it.
As for midi drum programming I,like many, have spent way to many hours moving the dots<grin> but now I don't have to move many as I use,"Jamstix2XL",

There are as good if not better drum programs around but they don''t have the one brilliant feature JS has which is a beat/fill generating,"Brain" and great stock kit sounds. Also it has a great forum and the owner/Boss replies on the forum as he cares.Check out some of the tunes on the left of the page.
Most of the material on my Reverbnation site
http://www.reverbnation.com/pauldouglas
are done with them.I know some my mixes are not as good as they should be but I also know some I've got them how I wanted and are certainly better than a lot I hear on forums. The most common fault I hear is,"Over-Recording" e.g recording too loud which is not needed in the digital domain. You haven't fallen into this trap by the looks of it.
Hey sheppola,
So cup of tea = better mix, got it! ![]()
I listened to some jamstix clips, that thing is amazing! Maybe it's time for me to upgrade. Thanks for the link.
I like your tunes too btw, especially Best I Can. The intro has a Van Halen feel to it, I'm a huge sucker for that band so I like it!
Hey Maybe I can send you my next mix before posting it online, that way I can get a second opinion before it's too late to tweak. If that's ok with you of course?
Thanks.
I really like this song very much... I'm a sucker for guitar using delay. Love the vocals, you obviously have a talent for writing. I agree with other people though in that I think the drums are a little too loud and overshadow the great melody of the guitar. Would love to hear more ![]()
Thanks Carrotchops! I appreciate it
.
I'm working on a few more tracks right now, so they'll be more to come shortly!
Trem,
I think the song itself is excellent! Guitar is very good! I agree there's too much reverb on at least the higher frequency drum sounds. I think the drums are a little loud also (I'm listening with headphones). I'm curious if you used pitch correction on your vocals, because I'm pretty sure you did. You are a good singer! Assuming you did use pitch correction, it makes me think, OK, his pitch control isn't always flawless (I wish my pitch control was a lot better), but in a certain way the pitch tweaks add an interesting element to your vocals.
Thanks Aaron!
Yes, I wish I could say I didn't need it but I had to use autotune on certain notes lol. Very perceptive I'm impressed!
When I record tracks I like to keep them to a minimum so that it's easily reproducible live, but sometimes it sounds kinda empty which is why I like my drums and guitars wet, just to fill in that space, but you're right I could probably get away with a little less reverb.
Thanks for your feedback! I'll be sure to take it into consideration for my next mix.
Just great song with nice melody.. I liked the composition and arrangement. good playing and singing
Thanks a lot!
