Need a little help with my UX2

Hi there,

 

recently got the UX2 + pod farm add-ons so I could enjoy a line6 audio interface without usb audio drop-outs.

I also own the X3, but the drop-outs made it impossible to use as interface.

But my question:

Is there a way to plug something in the stereo Line inputs and not have to open pod farm with latency and all that?

Lowering the latency all the way doesn't remove the latency completely.

The inputs only start working when I open pod farm or cubase... isn't this strange for a normal stereo line input??

I don't want this, I just want to monitor the line stereo channel in real time.. whenever i want in windows...

I can switch to the pod to do this (somehow the pod x3l has no problem doing this...) but I don't want to have to switch back and forth all the time because of the drop-outs...

So If anyone knows, help would be awesome!

    You really shouldn't be hearing any latency when you open an use podfarm with the UX2 -- don't monitor your guitar signal in cubase, just monitor it through Podfarm and you really should be getting next to zero latency -- this is the miracle of "tone direct" monitoring.

     

    When you run it this way, you should be able to run just using the line inputs in windows without any other software necessary. If you're actually hearing latency using the tonedirect monitoring, then I'd suggest dialing down the buffer size in the L6 control panel.  If that doesn't work, post again and give us more details about your setup.

      I understand what you are saying,

      and the latency is near-zero, but it's still noticable, especially with fast runs.

      I've tried this both through pod farm standalone and the cubase monitor... buth the same (near zero) latency.... though audible....

      So there really isn't a way to just direct monitor the line inputs without pod farm??

      I have a q6600 quad-core, 4gb of RAM, some msi motherboard that was supposed to be good.

      Windows XP pro is running, and everything works just fine.... just can't seem to get this right... don't know if the ux2 will allow these things.

      When I dial down the buffer size the latency gets less, but it doesn't seem to work well alll the way down....

    Oh this is an easy one. Go to All Programs/Line6/Tools/Line6 Audio-Midi Devices. On the inputs and recording tab select Line Stereo. Or if your signal is mono then just do Line 1 or 2. This will now be the default live input whether you open Podfarm or not.

    Strange, mine is showing the same behavior. I'm sure that is how it should work and that it worked before. Maybe we can get some help from Line 6 on this.

    Toneports use two different drivers - asio and windows wdm or mme. When you play mp3s or utube you are using Windows drivers which are no good for recording.

     

    I Cubase - the default driver is multimedia asio - which is a Windows driver with lots of latency. You can change that to toneport asio and you should get good results. And if Cubase crashes for any reason - it defaults back to the multimedia asio.

     

    But it depends on how you are hooking things up.

     

    If you are plugging the analog outs into another sound card - then the latency depends on that sound card and its drivers.

     

    So how are you routing the signal?

      I've tried all this, and I always use the correct drivers.

      Sometimes ASIO4ALL seems even more stable than the UX2 drivers, so I've used that sometimes,

      but this doesn't solve my problem.

      I have another soundcard from Yamaha (audiogram 6).

      And if you plug anything into any of the inputs its always audible...(direct monitoring I guess).

      Why isn't this possible without pod farm with the UX2?

        In Windows control panel - audio settings - if the UX2 is the default playback device - all sounds will use it.

         

        The signal will go out the analog outs and the headphones at the same time.

         

        You can plug either of those into speakers or another sound card. But if you use a different sound card then you would record from it which means double ad/da conversion - so the latency may be worse.

          Metaldude just wants his Line Inputs active without Podfarm on. Like if you had a cd player plugged in there, it would be such a pain to open Podfarm every time.

           

          Now I could have sworn it used to work this way, having one live input of your choice. Can anyone get any live input with Podfarm off and no other program open? Possibly a simple driver update by Line6 could fix it.

           

          I would start a support request with Line6, they likely wont see this thread.

    Not the solution, but a possible workaround the stereo monitor jack is always active. You can't record from it though. But you could send two signals, one to inputs and one to the monitor.

    That's correct. But the DAW has to be open or you can't hear it through the analog outs.

     

    I think my UX2 is using Windows Drivers when Podfarm is off, Vista is so lame.

      Programs like Audacity or BIAB can use the Toneport drivers - but they don't support asio - so there will always be lots of latency.

       

      And considering that the guitar signal goes first over usb - gets processed on the PC and back to the Toneport - routing it from there to another sound card isn't going to improve the latency. If he had a high quality low latency sound card - he would have to plug the guitar into it instead.

       

      I never believe that tonedirect isn't low enough latency - but that's just one of my theories and I don't want to argue that maybe some people can actually notice it. I certainly don't.

       

      As far as recording from the analog outs - I have plugged the outs into the analog in - then selected the ins as a recording source to record "what you hear" from the internet.

       

      Other than that - being that the UX1 is my sound card - any sound it plays go out the analog outs - except the guitar if Pod Farm or Gearbox or a plugin wasn't processing the signal.

    hey i also just got the ux2. there is no on and off switch when u turn off this unit do u just turn off the compture or u just can unplug the usb cable from the ux2 from your compture? for me when i am done i just unplug the usb cable from the compture that will turn it off. how do u turn your off? thanks

    Ok, so the problem still hasn't been solved.

    I've tried everything I could think of and also made the UX2 my only default soundcard etc.

    Still no sound unless I turn on pod farm.

    This has even more drawbacks:

     

    I want to plug in my pod x3l into the stereo-line input on the back of the UX2.

    I do this to be able to use my M9 in stereo pre or post amp model.

    So all the sound comes from my X3l with M9 in the loop.

    The problem now is, that I have to open podfarm to get sound, and now I can't open gearbox anymore to edit the x3l.......

    It says that I can't have more than 1 line6 app. running at the same time.....

     

    Please, if anybody can help me!!

    Line6, please make it possible to hear the UX2 inputs without having to switch on pod farm!!

      There is no processing of Toneports unless Pod Farm is open - so the signal is very quiet.

       

      But as Slingy said earlier - selecting line stereo in the control panel will pass the signal to Cubase. Don't forget to click the monitor button on the track or you won't hear anything. But insert the plugin on that track. Bypass it to hear the dry signal.

       

      I don't know about plugging a Pod into the line input - but it should send a processed signal to the track on sends 3 and 4. You have to press the F4 key to add a mono input. You could also just select line 1 or 2 in the control panel (line 6 - tools - audio-midi ) then the mono bus will be either send 3 or 4.

       

      Also the lines in are supposed to be line level - so you would probably be better off to plug the Pod into your other sound card and skip the UX2 altogether.

       

      I would certainly turn the volume way down if you want to experiment.
