OT - Epiphone Wilshire

I have experienced love at first sight with this guitar: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-Worn-66-Wilshire-Electric-Guitar?sku=581888

It's a re-issue of a guitar that was made in the mid 60's.  There are no reviews for it on MF yet because it's new stock.  Does anyone know anything about this re-issue?  The guitar seems so ugly that it's beautiful!  Also, the price is very reasonable.   B-r-r-r-r-p-p ! !  It's giving me some serious GAS!!

    I've been tempted by that guitar as well, but I really don't need another dual humbucker guitar.  The white version gets good reviews on both the MF and Guitar Center sites.

      Myself, I've always been a single coil person.  So this would be something quite different for me.  Those NY Mini-humbuckers that they're putting in theses Wilshires are the pickups that are installed on the Gibson Firebirds.  I've always loved Johnny Winter's soaring lead tone; and Johnny has, for the most part, always played a Gibson Firebird.  However, at this price I doubt that these pickups are exactly the same as what Gibson installs in their Firebird guitars.  Also, the pickups shown in the photos on the MF web page look different than the ones shown on the exact same guitar on Epiphone's web site.  Curious ...

        It's always the same - I click on a link - the first thing I see is a Canadian flag that says "this item ships to Canada for free" - I look at the price - I calculate the price in Can. funds in my head - then I wonder if there's a lefty - I wonder if there's duty - I wonder if it will arrive in one piece. I wonder why I keep doing this?

         

         

         

        And Mikey - everyone know "Mikey won't like it - he hates everything" - except for some kind of cereal. (you guys have seen that commercial - right?)

      Wife = GAS regulator.  Actually, GAS valve.  I'm sure she'll remind me that I just spent megabucks on my digital piano, which is true. 

       

      What a buzz kill, but if it wasn't for wifes we'd owe our souls to MF/Zzounds/Sweetwater.

      LOL!  Those old Silvertones really were some butt-ugly guitars, pbear! 

       

      Back in the late 60's, I had a friend who owned a Silvertone guitar.  It also came with a guitar case that had a small tube amp built right into it.  So he would open up the guitar case about 90 degrees, prop it up vertically, plug his ugly Silvertone guitar into it, and jam away for hours.

       

      It was the weirdest, ugliest thing I'd ever seen.  But I've always been a staunch advocate to the bizarre, the misfit, and the underdog.  Besides, the guy was actually a very good guitar player and a very righteous human being to boot.  So Karma eventually found its way, and my friends financial situation soon improved.  He was then able to graduate to a Les Paul Custom and a Vox AC30 amp.

       

      He sold the Silvertone guitar, but kept the Silvertone Amp/Guitar Case as kind of a practice amp.  FYI, I was amazed at how good his Les Paul sound through that guitar case amp!  I'll see if I can find a photo of one of those old things later, and I'll post a link to it.

        You can actually see the tubes via round portholes.  I'd forgotten about that.  SO bizarre!!

        Ouch!  My friend's Les Paul sounded much better through the amp than the Silvertone guitar in this video does.

          ....still - all in all.....

           

          If Line6 modeled the Silvertone guitar case, it would not sound as good.  Because the dynamics would obviously be lost !!!

            It would be funny if someone did try to model this thing.  But I'm not sure why anybody would wantto, LOL!

            I can't get over how spartan an utilitarian this thing looks.  The tubes and the speaker are just openly exposed.  It looks like something that you might not want to touch with wet hands and/or barefooted.   Z-z-z-z-z-t-t-t-t-!!!

              not to mention the fact that there is no padding to protect the guitar!  i had a classmate in college who had one of these cases--never got to hear it though--it's got tubes though so it must be magical.  was it supposed to be used as an open-back or closed back?  obviously the you-tube video isn't doing it justice though--i can hear more acoustic strumming than amplified--i'm guessing not the best micing technique.  just think what L6 could do with Pocket Pod guts and some PC-like drivers.  I'm sure that i could rip my Micro Spider apart and fit the guts into a case--but the dern thing is so cute!!

                I seem to recall that the input jack was inside the case and so you had to keep it propped open.  That video sounds really bad for at least three reasons [1] The guys playing kind of sucks [2] the amp is very old and in need of some repairs and [3] that's a 5" speaker that's about 45 years old.   I having to remember way back 40 years, but I seem to remember that the one my friend had sounded a whole lot better than the one in this video.

                 

                Of course, a 5" speaker is going to suck no matter what.  But again, I seem to remember that it sounded pretty cool if you didn't try to crank the volume up to much.  Perfect for bedrooms and apartments.  I would liked to have heard it through an external speaker.  A lot of things were really crude and weird back in the late 60's.  But I distinctly remember thinking that this thing was pretty weird even back then, LOL!
