Variax 500 will not "hold" default models

I have a variax 500 that I can't get to hold (or save) the default models.  I tried to put it back to the original factory models via workbench and I can see the original defaults but as soon as I disconect the system they all go away and the guitar sounds the same on every selection.  I reconnect it to the workbench and see that they are all gone (no models on any of the settings).  Ideas anyone?  Am I doing something wrong?  I'm new to both the variax and this software, so it's a good possibility that it's just something I'm missing..................

i think  when your  reflashing  the  guitar  you have  to press  down  on the selector  knob   and  hold  it  till the  lights  on the  workbench  hardware  start to flash  indicating  data  transfer   then  let  it  up   and  dont  touch  it again till  they  stop flashing.    if  thats  what  you have  been  doing  then   there  may be  an  internal  problem.

once  you have  reflashed  the  guitar   i would  disconnect  it  shut down  the  program   it  might  still be  in reflash  mode    then  restart  workbench  if you want  to make  changes.  if  your  just  going  to your  amp  use  the  trs  cable  or  just a  regular  cable,
