can't get my x3 to work as recording interface

I've downloaded the driver, it shows up in Sonar as my ASIO record and playback master...have the input on my tracks set to channel 3 on the x3 and the output going to the x3. When I hit play the meters kick, and they show the signal going to the x3 but I get nothing in the headphones. Also, I've turned the volume way down on the x3 patch and if I even breathe on the guitar the input meter kicks way into the red.

Can you help me??

How are you monitoring the sound? You should be monitoring form the X3 - not your computer. Try using the X3 headphone jack.

Not sure what to say about the meter levels - but be aware that the master volume knob and your pedal (on the X3L) don't necessarily control the USB signal level being delivered to your DAW. The level being received by the DAW depends on the settings on your X3 Outputs and System pages as well as the levels set in the DAW.

I think it depends on the model of POD - the Bean, Live, and Pro handle it differently. I have the Live and the manual for that (Rev E, pg 3-14) says:

USB 2.0 – POD X3 Live’s USB 2.0 jack lets you connect directly to a USB 2.0-equipped computer, and take advantage of many computer-powered features:
Line 6 Monkey software makes it easy to install software and get updates. Install • driver software with Line 6 Monkey, and POD X3 provides 8 audio inputs to your computer via USB:
1-2 is the main signal, configured on POD X3’s Outputs page for Digital Outs.
3-4 is Tone 1 separately in stereo.
5-6 is Tone 2 separately in stereo.
7 is the sum of the inputs you’ve chosen for Tone 1.
8 is the sum of the inputs you’ve chosen for Tone 2.

So here the USB signal is affected by the Digital Outs settings on the Outputs page (see manaul pg 6-4):

Digital – sets the signal for the digital output. There are four options:
Match Studio/Direct – Digital outputs the Tone and Pan settings as shown.
Studio/Direct Tone 1 – Digital outputs Tone 1 only, panned center.
Studio/Direct Tone 2 – Digital outputs Tone 2 only, panned center.
Dry Inputs – Digital Left outputs the unprocessed input(s) to Tone 1, and Digital Right outputs the unprocessed input(s) to Tone 2.

I'm not exactly sure how it works on the Bean or Pro - but the manual should describe it on the relevant pages.

By the way, if you're recording the dry signal from the X3 it can be very low level (intended for re-amping in your DAW using hte POD Farm plugin).

Also, I would turn off any monitoring in the DAW just to make sure it's not affecting things.

By the way - you'll never hear any midi processing form the X3 - it's not a general midi interface and it's not a midi sound module. It has very limited midi capabilities (essentially sending/receiving/passing thru program and parameter changes).

well that's the point, it should be that easy.

I will review what you've said above and I'll try to assist.

okay so you are hearing something form the headphones, but not what you want to.  you may need to enable audio monitoring in the DAW as otherwise it wont actually output it to the X3 even though the DAW's meters show it's creating the drum track, etc.

so I'd check that you're enabling the monitoring correctly in your DAW, as that caught me out a while back in reaper.

to test that your headphone socket is working, disconnect from your PC and plug a guitar in and connect the headphones and see if it works.  if that works then it WILL work with your DAW if you enable the correct monitoring settings in your DAW, for which you'll need to check out the DAW manual, or ask on the forum for your DAW.

Hmmmm ...what model of X3 are you using - the Bean, the Live, or the Pro?

If it's the Live, there's one other thing that comes to mind: the infamous USB audio dropout issue. It's well documented in this forum and there's a reliable fix available. But first things first: Are you using the X3 Live?

The DAW is the Midi processor...shouldn't I hear what the computer is generating as far as drum samples, etc in addition to the audio tracks???

Yes - you're right. You should hear the audio that your DAW has produced from a midi track. What I meant was you can't expect to send the midi track data to the X3 for sound generation.

RE: can't get my x3 to work as recording interface

    Hi,

Did you make sure to check Output Settings on your X3 unit? It should be set to Match Studio/Direct Mode. That seems to be the most common point of error, but this may not be the case for you. Please double-check and let us know your results.

      Regards,

      L6Perry
