Soundclips w/ M13, Michael Kelly and Egnater Renegade 65

Finally got around to recording a few things with the new rig. There will be more to come.
This a Michael Kelly Patriot Custom (neck pickup, coil tapped) into the Egnater Renegade 65 watt head (clean channel) using the 4CM with a L6 M13. The head feeds a 1936 Marshall 2x12 with T-75s. Mic'd with an SM58 into a Toneport UX-2 into Reaper. The only post-processing I did was to mess with the levels a bit and added a limiter to squish a couple of high peaks and to slightly boost the volume overall.
The first round of playing is bone dry, no fx or anything. The 2nd set of clips uses the M13 in the loop for a rotary w/ horn and a delay (the digital w/ mod, I believe) and I used the amp's reverb.
The amp is really amazing, by the way. It has two fully independent channels, each of which have the following variables: 18/65 watt switch; a "tight/deep" switch; a "bright/normal" switch; preamp gain; eq (bass, mid, treble); "tube mix" (lets you blend any combination of the amp's 6L6 power amp with the EL34 power amp -- really cool!), master volume and reverb. There is also a shared presence, density, and "main 1" and "main 2" master volume controls. These all work with the included footswitch, which lets you switch channels, turn the fx loop on or off, turn the reverb on or off, and engage the 2nd master volume control. Each of these elements in the footswitch can be assigned to either channel or both. So if you wanted to use reverb on the clean channel but not the od channel, you can assign the footswitch to let you turn the reverb on and off for channel one but not channel two.
So I recorded some other stuff with my strat and hope to be able to post that stuff this evening. Let me know what you think and if you've got stuff you want to hear, let me know.
Cheers,
Fester2k
Nice and sparkly clean! Try that song intro with the tri chorus and some delay. 385ms with about three repeats audible.
Now...bring on the DIRT.

Yeah, I love that tri chorus -- the mods on the M13 are sooooo much better than the X3's, it's incredible. Dirt is on the way (recorded, hopefully it sounds good, we'll see -- it sounded good through headphones).

Dirt brought. Same setup, except this is with my strat. First section is amp only, no M13 fx and no verb. Second bit has lots of M13 and amp verb goodness. I hate my pace on these clips -- way too fast, but you'll get the idea.
When I get some more time I'll record some dirt clips with the Michael Kelly.
Enjoy, tell me what you like/dislike about the sound!
Oh and full disclosure here -- I did add a dose of EQ to tame some rumbling on the low end and brought out the high end a bit. There is also a model of the Fairchild 670 compressor in there. And a brickwall limiter.

Fester2k
Dude! That amp sounds VERY nice! That M13 really sounds good, too. I know what you mean vs. the POD effects, night and day...

Thanks, bro! I'll probably fiddle with guitars and maybe an outboard wah or something, but I see this M13/Renegade 65/1936 being the core of my rig for a long, long time.

Nice analog delay on that last lead passage. I like the sound you have going on there, but you know I wanted to hear the MK. ![]()

Thanks, Karl! Didn't mean to be a tease. Want to know why I didn't record any dirt with the MK? I couldn't think of anything to play that I wanted to record. Very, very weird, as I'd been just playing for like seven hours straight on Wednesday before I finally decided to suck it up and start recording. ![]()
There will be dirty MK clips, I promise. Sorry to make you wait so long, lol.

Dang dude, that amp sounds sweet!

Thanks, man! Obviously I'm thrilled with it. What surprised me the most is how much I absolutely *love* the clean channel! Super versatile, and superior IMHO to the Mesa Boogie Express 5:50 clean channel. No joke. And the OD channel for my style and taste on the Renegade is far, far superior to that Express, which I thought I'd love but man I really hated that amp.

Both clips sounded good.

Against my better judgment, I'll go ahead and post this awful playing. It's the Michael Kelly version of the rig where I looped the rhythm section of "it's not love" using the barberpole phaser into the tri-chorus model, the low res delay and a hall reverb. The distorted stuff is the M13's "comp boost" into the OD channel of the amp with a little delay from the M13 and the amp's reverb.
The playing is absolutely awful (I was literally running between the guitar rig and grilling some chicken in the backyard), so please just focus on the tones and let me know what you think!

fester2k,
I think all 3 clips have nice tone!
Double A is right. Nice! Good fingers and gear. All you guys have me gassing for the M13 now.

Thanks, guys! I listened to the third clip (the "it's not love" clip) this a.m. and it's clearly the worst of the three for a lot of reasons. There's a ton of noise in the recording and it sounds like I must've had a gate active in Gearbox b/c I hear that sort of fluttering sound you get when you're right on the edge of engaging the gate.
Dasvox -- the M13 is a beast of a pedal. Unless you've just got to have old school analog equipment (and I can respect that, I really can), this thing to me is the shining star in L6's lineup right now.

I will never hear any of this gear unless I import it! So!!! ![]()
I have some questions! The M-13 VS the M-9 Are the things you are doing doo-able? Or is it like comparing apples & oranges?

There's good and bad news here when you're comparing the M13 and the M9. Before we get to that, note the price -- in the US, the M9's street price is $400, and the M13 is $500, though you can buy them for 20% off if you're patient enough to wait for a sale. I waited. ![]()
So the good news for the M9 is that it has all the same exact fx models as the M13. It has multiple "scenes" that you can setup beforehand and choose between different options on the fly. The M9 is also a ton smaller than the M13, so a person with a large pedalboard with a lot of other fx can integrate the M9 into it relatively easily (it's about the same size as the MM/DM/DD/etc boxes).
Here are the upgrades you get in the m13:
# of simultaneous fx: M13 - 4; M9 - 3
# of available fx per slot: M13 - 3; M9 - 2 (the M13 uses a 4 slot/3 fx per slot arrangement, while the M9 uses a 3 slot/2 fx per slot arrangement).
# of screens: M13 4 (one per slot); M9 - 1 (total).
Fx Loop: M13 - yes; M9 - no.
As I see it, for the extra $80 or $100, it's a no-brainer. I don't have a pedalboard full of fx, and all these nice aspects of the M13 are useful to me. 3 fx at a time is pretty tight if you use delay and reverb all the time (which I do). The bigger deal, for me, is the fx loop. By not having an fx loop on the M9, you basically sacrifice a signifcant portion of the unit's intended purpose, since I don't really like delay, mods or verbs pre-amp, and I don't like stomps and most filters after the amp.
So back to your question -- "are these things do-able with the M9?" the answer is "many of them, yes, but some no." For example, the clean sound on the "it's not love" where I ran a phaser into a chorus into a delay into a reverb, no -- the M9 only gives you 3 fx at a time. But if your amp has a decent reverb on it, you could use the M9 for the other three fx. Also, where I ran the boost comp before my amp's input on the OD channel and the delay in the amp's fx loop, I can only do that with the M13. But, for example, if you already have a good wah, a good od/boost pedal and an amp w/ decent reverb, then I could see the M9 filling in nicely in the loop where you really only use the delays, the mods and some of the filters.
Ok, hope that helps!

Fester2k
Great stuff there. Both in your Playing and in your answers!
I personally have always preferred the 13, even before the 9 was conceived! LOL
But the "9´s" footprint is very appealing.
Thank you for a great review!
man. I wish I had one of those amps...incredible. I have 2 Atomic 18 watters sitting..wonder if anyone would want them

I bet they'd go quickly on eBay. They are collectors items now.
thanks Karl,
I want an Egnator LOL. I'm suprised you didn't go for one...Any suggestion on an asking price for those Atomics..?
I'm way out of the loop these days.
Well, I very nearly had the 112 combo version of that amp. But Musician's Friend had it on backorder forever. But then I took a couple of detours and headed in a completely different direction.
I don't even remember how much those went for originally. $500? I bet you'd make some folks really happy at $300 each. I see one completed, sold listing in eBay for that amount.
ahh, that explains why you didn't get one....yet LOL
thanks, I'll look into selling at least one of those Atomics..they are great amps actually..I just don't use 'em no more

I agree w/ Karl that eBay is probably your best route. I sold my Atomic 18 on eBay back in May for $325 + $50 shipping. Unfortunately, the shipping cost more than I'd estimated, so be careful there.
I should also say that as much as I love this Egnater (it really is a sah-weeeet amp!), I'm equally enamoured with this Marshall 1936 2x12. It sounds gorgeous clean and it can rawk the house, too. It's got T-75s in it so it can handle a boatload of volume. I'm still tweaking the guitar collection, but I'm pretty set now with the Renegade/M13/1936 trio, and highly recommend all three components in equal measure.

Marshall "1936" is a Cab?
But you compaired it to the Egnater?
I´m just dying to know which Marshall Amp you are liking?

Sorry for the confusion, mate -- the 1936 is a 2x12 cab only, no amp. I'm just trying to spread the credit around -- it's not just the amp that sounds good, this cab is largely responsible for the tone. I completely underestimated how much a great cab can really contribute to the overall sound. It sounded really good with my X3 with the cab sims off, and man it just loves my Egnater as much as I do, lol!

Fester2k
Thank you!
Good to know!
I am not familiar with the "Marshall" line (Completely) Hence the Pergunta! ![]()
Man, that's FAT. I hear some good tone in there. Just a little too congested in the midrange, though. Great tone from that rig you've got there!
I had the exact same rig a few months ago. Sold it before I could get it all working nice. Wish I didn't!

Wow -- really? I'm so freaking happy with the rig I did a little happy dance when I got back from the in-laws last night just b/c I missed the rig. What didn't you like about it? And what did you move into?
One thing that gave the rig a nice improvement on the OD side was new preamp tubes from Eurotubes.

Fester, are you using the 4 cable method with the M13 and head, or just using the M13 for effects?
This guy on youtube has some nice clips with the Egnater - I love his lead tone, and he is just adding a Boss delay in the loop.

He has a couple of other clips with the Egnater that are good too.

4CM w/ the M13 and head. Slot one of the fx is routed preamp, the other three are in the loop. Thinking of adding an external wah b/c it's a little hard to have a single scene that does everything I'd want on the M13. Plus I don't love using the external pedal on the m13 for wah, mainly b/c I have to hit a separate switch on the m13 to activate/deactivate the wah.

Did you get my PM?
And when can I expect shipment of this amp?
Please I am not being serious at all!
But Maybe one day? (Alas its not on my list) But should be! For now I just place realistic objectives on "The List" !

Ha, yeah got the pm -- sorry I didn't get back to you - glad everything arrived safe and sound.
About that amp shipment, ah...yeah...well...uh...price would probably be 2 or 3 times the actual price to get it to you, don't you think? Yikes!
I can imagine you do have to be careful about gear choices where you are! This amp is a keeper, that's for sure. It's kind of the perfect amp for someone used to tweaking like crazy on a pod -- it's got lots of different flavors, but it can be a simple tube amp, too!
Cheers,
Fester2k
I have the same head. Love it. Its simple and extremely versatile. So what tubes exactly did you swap out and what did you end up replacing them with???
