[Please Help Mic too low]

Hello..
frist i sorry for my english..i'm form thailand(Asia)
this is my last hope about recording music..
i try to asked in Computer music in my country but no one can helpme..

hopefully somebody will read my topic and gave me the answer..
(i known it's very hard to understand with my stupid langued i'm very sorry)

this is my equipment
now i'm using
"POD STUDIO UX2"
"Shure SM58"
"Neutrek XLR Cable"

ok let's get to my ploblem..
it's about Record with microphone.
When i record Vocal or Acoustic Guitar the sound it's very quiet!!

i turn the Mic gain Knob about 80%..But the sound is come out about 10%
i the software they have a micpre...
when i using by microphone.. i can not hear different between plugin mic with out preamp and not use a preamp..
the sound level is same .... the parameter it's showme about -35 db...it's about 10% of 100%

then i try to boost it up +18dB (in the POD software they have this option for mic)
Sound come out more .. but noise come out very much.. that why i can't turn the mic gain up to 100%

not boost = low singnel (i can't work with this sound i'm sure)
boost = come with noise (i don't want to use noise gate..it's very make a sound very bad) now i;m using some Noise redruction

i'm verry sure my room it's verry quiet ..becouse i working with notebook and some time i record in bathroom sure it's quiet

and somebody told me " Hey you should buy a new interface" or " Buy a new microphone" "Buy a new computer"
i can pay everthing about they said.. and when i go to store i can't try before buy ..
i don't have much more money for this dream.. i worked hard for 3-4 mount for audio interface i want to capture the dream..

so i need to make sure what i should buy next things..

and this quiestion..
"if i buy a external premic for make a high signel before plug it in POD UX2..
The Signel will high and i don't need to boost to much gain in the audio interface is it right??"
So noise will not come to much and i get a high Mic Volume is it right??
( i think i'll get ART TUBE MP3 it's chaep for me)

or i should buy other things not a micpre???

i use 1 and a half hour to type my topic it's very hard for me...i never type English long like this before in my life..
if you have read my topic
i really thanks .. doesn't matter you'll reply my qusetion or not..

hope someone help me out..
Thanks you very much

First, let me congratulate you on your effort in writing this message in English. You have made yourself understood.

I believe the equipment you are using, if it all works and is used correctly, should be adequate to record acoustic guitar and vocals using the mic. I do not think you need to purchase other equipment (e.g. a separate mic preamp).

Here are some thoughts I have:

    - you say you are turning the MIC Gain knob up to about 80%. What happens if you turn it higher, closer to 100%?

    - the UX2 provides phantom power, but your SM58 does not require it. Make sure the phantom power switch on the UX2 is turned off.

    - are you using a preamp in POD Farm? I think you should be. Try turning up the drive/volume of the preamp. That should boost the signal before it leaves the UX2 for your computer recording program. I use a POD X3 and record a dry (unprocessed) signal that is initially very low. But when processed by the POD Farm preamp it is a good level. Sometimes I need to turn the POD Farm preamp drive/volume levels quite high.

    - some SM58 microphones have on/off switches. I know it sounds obvious, but make sure the switch (if you have one) is on.

    - try a different XLR cable. Perhaps that is faulty.

    Hope this helps.

I don't know if mic >>> external premic >>>UX2 will help. It's true that this will provide the UX2 with a stronger signal, but I don't think the UX2 should NEED a stronger signal. Is it possible for you to obtain a mic preamp for a trial period to test it out? If it works you can keep it; if not you can return it and get your money back.

when i use only pod farm and boost mic up +18dB it's sound not come with noise..

That suggests your microphone is working properly, and that POD Farm is able to provide a good signal from the microphone.

But when i use with Cubase and Click on Moniter button for hear what i playing my sound come noise....

Check your Cubase confguration to make sure that the audio setup uses the UX2 and its ASIO interface as the input/output audio device. That allows you to record the dry (unprocessed) signal as wellas the wet (processed) signal. Check which signal you're recording with. It sounds to me like you may be recording the dry signal. This will bypass any POD Farm processing that you may be using in the UX2. The recorded dry signal will be very low level and will get noisy when you turn up the volume.

The UX2 user manual should describe the selectable output options for recording. Try recording the wet (processed) signal. You can select which signal to record from the inputs area in Cubase when you arm the track for recording.

Also, I suggest you turn off monitoring in Cubase and use the UX2 headphones jack to monitor the sound.

Recording the dry signal can be useful if you want to use the POD Farm plugin inside Cubase. That will allow you to apply all the UX2/POD Farm effects to the dry signal after it has been recorded, so that you can re-amp and tweak/edit the tone without having to reperform the original recording.

            Hope this helps.

... and my DAW is Cubase SX3

I noticed this statement from Line tech support in another thread:

When POD Farm was initially released, we had tested it to be compatible with latest available versions of the most popular DAW recording programs.  At the time of release, it was tested to be compatible with Cubase 4.5.2.

Now, Cubase SX3 was released in 2004 with several updates since.  Unfortunately, if you are having problems with using POD Farm with Cubase SX3, you will need to update to at least Cubase 4.5.2 to be supported.

              Regards,

Looks like your problem may be related to your DAW. If possible you should update to a later release of Cubase. That may solve your problem.
