Playback of CD input louder than when recording

I use the CD input to feed the stereo output from a set of digital drums into the Spider Jam for recording rhythm loops on the fly. However the playback volume of the drums is significantly louder than it is during recording. Not a huge problem when the drums (or whatever I put into the CD input) are recorded first but if I'm overdubbing them then they overwhelm everything else once they start looping.
Plugging the drums into the AUX input works fine, but I want to use that for a bass track.
I suspect it may be because the CD input is stereo but playback is in mono. The mixdown from stereo to mono may be changing the volume.
Am I missing something or is it the stereo/mono mixdown causing the problem?
All you have to do is adjust the appropriate playback levels in the INPUTS/LEVEL menu (two presses).
Yes, I can do that AFTER the loop starts playing but the problem still exists that the loop initially starts playing louder than it is recorded no matter what the playback or overdub volumes are set to. And if I'm overdubbing over an existing CD recording then the volume of that recording will drop when I adjust the volume. For instance I sometimes build up a drum loop with multiple overdubs - getting the balance between high-hat and snare is very difficult if I can't hear the relative volumes when I'm recording.
Sometimes I'm just using the Spider Jam as a looper, feeding the output from a mixer into the CD input. In this situation I would have to adjust the volume after every overdub.
However....I've now realised that the problem only exists if I'm using headphones or the RCA outputs for monitoring which reinforces my stereo/mono theory. If I'm just listening to the speaker then I'm hearing the mono version both as I record and during playback and everything is fine.
If anyone wants to reproduce the problem then record a loop from the CD input at constant volume, using headphones to monitor. As soon as you hit the record button again to start loop playback you should notice a drastic increase in volume.
I'm pretty much convinced now that it is a stereo mixdown issue. Only if I record AND listen in stereo does the problem occur.
My simple solution was to not use the CD input. At home when I'm using headphones or the RCA outputs I just feed a mono signal from my mixer into the AUX input. When I'm jamming with other people and using the speaker then I'm free to do whatever I want
Stay in the mix and in the know.
