Guitarist Magazine Review

UK guitarist magazine has reviewed a JTV69 (US) model in this months mag. They went on about the improved sounds and much better feel for the JTV over the mark I variax. They basically liked it a lot. The accompanying CC has some sound samples on it but I haven't had chance to listen yet. Their reviews usually get posted to their website a couple of weeks after the mag hits the stores.
Looks like their video review is already on YouTube. Great comparison with actual 'casters versus their models. (Although the sound quality is lacking in the recording, in my opinion):

The fingerstyle playing on the Martin D28 model @ 10:00 is the best example of how good the acoustic models are that I've seen on the web. I dare you to close your eyes and listen to it.

Wonderful review! Seems like the original Tele and LP have a bit more bite... but the JTV does a good job! I also really like the color 'Lake placid blue'. In other pictures it seemed more 'lighter blue'. I ordered a 3 tone sb, hm, I hope my guitar store has also a blue one to compare. Maybe I will switch. 3 More weeks to go?

I am not a big fan of the demos where they try to come up with a single amp setting to demo all the guitars. This guys sounds was better than the anderton guy's at least. To me it sounded like the variax was actually hotter than the mags of the orginal guitars. The tele bridge sounded cleaner on the real tele and the variax sounded like it was pushing the amp into more overdrive which would result in less bite. That sound was not a great way to compare teles etc.
I also found it odd he didn't really do any strat comparisons as that is where variax I tended to be weakest.
The more I think about it, variax is really made for using with a POD. Having 25 different axes in your hand is cool but if you are gonna run all of them through a JCM800 you are really not gonna get the benefits.
If I am playing a tele I want twins, matchless bmans and voxes. Strat I want fenders, cornfords, matchless, budah and even the clean side of a JCM900 etc. LP I want plexi, lead and soldano etc etc etc etc.
The lake placid blue does look cool. If they made one in purple I just might have gotten a 69 in addition to 2 59s. . .. but would change the neck.
Where did you order your 59s from? I've heard people mention Musician's Friend . . . I buy lots of stuff from them but I don't see any JTVs available yet.

Just read your post and looked. YEP - they are listed on Musician's Friend. ONLY the Korean versions are offered. They start @ $1,099.99 for the 89 in two colors, then $1,199.99 for the 69 in four colors, then $1,299.99 for the 59 in three colors.

Thanks Neal -- guess I didn't search hard enough!
(p.s. Did you ever get your beta?)

You're most welcome and glad I could help.
No, I didn't get my beta yet either. But Rich promised me I would get the model and finish I was hoping for. So I guess I'll just keep waiting to get mine and then do all the side by side vids I have been planning to do for months. Although - with all the other video demos popping up already from those with Korean models I'm not sure what vidoes would make sense for me to post once I do get my "no-longer-beta" guitar.
I will certainly be thrilled whenever it shows up it will feel like Christmas (hopefully BEFORE the actual Christmas - LOL) and I am hoping I like it a much as everyone else who has positive things to say about the playability of the model 59 style guitar.
I have to agree with you about the variax being more effective when used with a pod or modeling amp such as a vetta or AX212.

Remember, the guitars we modeled are not the guitars he was comparing to. The tele we modeled for the bridge position was a 1960 tele with a rosewood neck.
Really nice review..
I've been using the Variax 700 exclusively for many years now.
It took a while to get used to it because it lacked some twang and spank of the Strats I have.
Using workbench I put Strat pickups on a LP Junior or LP Special.
This helped a lot along with EQing in the POD XT (X3)
However lately I have returned to using my Strats.
I'm much happier, I do miss the acoustic models etc…
Enter the JTV!!
My prayers are answered.
I'll be the fool at the front of the line.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
