MIDI Control for DT50

I just received my DT50 and I have been messing around with it with just my gutiar plugged into it...

Right off the bat I was able to dial in some sick tones and I LOVE IT!!!

 

I have nto hooked up my POD HD 500 to it yet but I am liking so much what I am hearing that I may want to use it as a straight amp!

 

The question I have is this...

The amp has two channels withg 4 voicings for each channel. I could by a footswitch so that I can switch between channel A and channel B, but each channel would have only one voice at a time. I would like to be able to control the amp so that I by stepping on a MIDI controller, I can switch to either channel on whatever voicing I want at any time.... that way I will have countless combinations... can this be done?

I just can't believe the lack of documentation on this amp... the quick guida manual says it can be controlled via MIDI.. and I am sure they are talking about the switches but not the knobs (E.Q., Gain, Leve) which would make sense.....

But If I like the amps own tones and I am happy with them, I would use my POD HD in the effects loop as an effects processor and use the amps two channels and four voicings if what I want to do is possible.

    should not be a problem to do this, but obviously we would need a bit more DT50 info in the midi department to accomplish it.

      Hey guys

       

      I have had my hd500/dt50 for a month or so now and I still like the tones from the dt50 better as well. Everyone says the preamps in the podhd are the same in the amp.... but I have not found the sweet spot then. I have opened up a couple forums attempting to find out just this how to set up the hd500 preamps to mimic the exact tone the dt50 offers, so we can do all this without midi operation. On the other side of the pic if the $500 processor could give you exactly what the $1500 amp could then why buy the amp? But all we are asking is to use both units together to get the amp sound...

       

      So in my perfect scenerio what I would want is this

       

      Be able to have my preset tones on the hd500 midi control a patch/preset 1A to give me dt50 channel A set up tone of topology 1 with my settings, hitting amp off on my effects chain (yes I still want all the M effects if using the amp tone soley) would give channel B of topology 1, perhaps I want more drive or presence etc.

      Patch/Preset 1B would be topology 2 with my settings etc. etc.

      This to my thinking does not sound like much more than the pod can do already, its just lacking the key ingredients

       

      I think I could happily live within the 4 presets for playing live if I had complete control and instant switching between them, I don't understand how/why L6 would put out a $1500 amp with 4 voicings and not provide a way to switch between them. And to be honest I think it will be absoute BS if they come out with a seperate pedal to do this ..what the podhd should be able to do and touted to be able to do... in future months.

       

      Does this mean that I do not want to be able to use the other amps in the podhd .. no but I would probably use them for recording more than live playing.

        Hi !

         

        I own my hd500/dt50 for 2 month ago. If found DT50 sounds better than the pod pre amp models. I've post many messages in the forum, and everybody tell me the pod pre amp are the same. I spend many time to configure my pod presets, but they still sound smaller, weaker than the DT50. My friends are agree, it's not my ears. I think the pod processor can't sound exactly as the dt50 amp.

        I just want to use the pod as a midi controler to instantly switch between the 4 voicings, and use the pod in the effect loop as an effect processor.

        It seems to be impossible because pod can send just one command for each footswitch...

         

        Line6, your amp is so great, but we can't use it the way we want. Please update the pod hd 500 to control the entire DT50.

          I'm really pleased that some of you agree with me on this one. I didn't get involved in the debate on the other threads regarding whether the HD500 pre amp models sound like the DT50 because a lot of seriously heavy opinion suggests they are the same. I can tell you now, they ain't. I have gone back to using 3 very differing overdrive type pedals straight into the DT50 head and have a delay and EQ pedal in the loop. The difference using traditional pedals to using the pod is staggering, yes staggering. In my humble opinion, to achieve the sound I am looking for there is nothing on the Pod HD500 that can compete against a MXR Distortion III running into the DT50 front end whether using topology 1 or 4 and I use a single button channel switch. I'm not saying the HD is bad just doesn't have the same feel although sounding similar when you set up the HD in such a manner. Ok, I lose out on many control thingamybobs but I am a live guitar player and I get what I want in the analogue realm with this fantastic amp. I've finally woken up to the fact that as much as I keep getting suckered into the L6 ethos, my personal needs are really quite simple and that's the way I will stay and let my playing do the talking.

           

          Don't get me wrong the HD500 is a marvellous tool but I won't be using it live again any time soon. At last I can set it up permanently at home in the studio.

           

          There is a bloody good reason why manufacturers of stomp pedals are still in business. There is also a damn fine reason too why many of the guitar players I watch and respect in my neck of the woods would never gig with all in one guitar boards like the XT Live, X3 Live, HD500 (I have em all).

           

          The dream rig may suit some and whilst I am not really a tube nerd nor old school traditionalist and indeed, I embrace modern technological wonders  there remains the simple fact that things don't work equally for all.

           

          JTV 69 (strat mostly and occasional LP) > a few stomps>really good amp>4x12 celestions = live gig rig that sounds just right and that is all I could ask for.

           

          I may record tonight's gig and come back with some examples of what I mean.

            I Agree Mark. I haven't used my HD500 for the last four gigs for the reasons you have stated. If I could use the HD500 just for the effects it would be great. I think some of the effects are very good, and part of the blame falls on me, I just haven't had the time to find all the sounds I need. I don't doubt that thay are in there, but I find that some of the effects sound different at different volume levels. If I were able to find a place to play at gig volume, then tweak the patches I'm sure I could find what I need, it just requires more time than I have right now. Between gigs with two bands, rehearsals with both, open mic nights(Yes, anytime, anywhere), I want to tweak on the fly, and with the DT50 I can do that, not the HD500. There has to be a way for LIne6 to allow us to do this. I refuse to believe that the HD500 isn't capable of letting us forego an amp model and utilize the effects with the DT50/25. By the way, I have been getting many compliments on my DT50's tone. I had some of the guys in my two local music stores play the DT50 and they are very impressed. I'm getting a DT25 head very soon for amaller gigs and open mics. Thanks.
