Re: Please Post Your JTV Arrival Here

I received a replacement JTV59-TSB last week (it was replacing a BLK one that had the switch issue, went back for repair and came back still with the switch issue, although, to be fair, not as faulty as yours appears to be as mine was random and only happened 3 separate times - yet I still opted for a replacement). Anyway - the replacement JTV59-TSB (Serial number W110400366) had background (poss bad earth) noise when using the mag pu's with VDI cable into X3L, many of the model sounds also had weird background noises, and then it exhibited both the random model changing and stuck on one model variations of the faulty switch issue. I contacted Line6 UK who said they would need it back for repair - and that is where it is now.

There appears to be several new UK owners who have just received ther JTV59s and hit the faulty switch issue - serials beginning W1104 - so maybe they just had a bad batch.

Disappointing I know - I was gutted that my replacement was worse than the first one - but it is fixable - so have a word with your dealer and if they can't give you a replacement then they can arrange to have it sent off to Line6 for repair.

Hi Mike , well just tried mine out for a good hour and thankfully its behaving , just been wizzing up and down the models and the tunings to see if i could force an error but it appears to be one of the lucky ones . Did notice Andertons had a few communication breakdowns between the staff when ringing up , got told on Monday that I was fourth on the list and only 3 in stock despite being told end of august that mine was the only one in the warehouse and ready to be sent .... to be fair they have just had a major refit and things are a bit up in the air . My serial # is W110400641 which if i'm understanding the serial sequence correctly is the 641st to be made in Apr , so 3700 before yours ... I know Rich said they were ramping up preduction but thats a hell of a lot guitars ,

I dont think they picked up on the flux problem  till after april ( please correct if i'm wrong ) so i'm thinking they are just edging their bets and sending them out with the minimal of testing then the few that do come back faulty they sort out later , but your switch problem doesnt seem to follow the normal givin up the ghost sequence others are reporting , does the 3 way work ok with the mags ?

I'm starting to wonder whether the last 5 digits actually represent the nth guitar made, instead of the nth guitar made in April. Anyone have any ideas on this?

No, that isn't it.  I had several of these guitars pass through my hands.  I can assure you that the first 4 digits are consistent with the YYMM theory but I don't particularly know what the last 5 digits mean.

    HI Edstar,

I get the bad noise when using mag pickups with the vdi plugged into a HD500 as well, are you saying that some of these guitars do not have this noise?

My serial is 110400295, I have not had a switch problem yet but basically the mag pickups are useless if the digital cable is used.

    Cheers

    Andy

I agree. I was talking only about the last 5 digits, not the first 4.

What I meant is that I have seen older guitars that have last 5 digits that are numerically greater than newer guitars, so the last 5 digits isn't a monotonically increasing number since the launch.

Re: Please Post Your JTV Arrival Here

    Hi Andy,

Yes.  My first JTV59-BLK which had a serial beginning W1101, and which I received in June 2011, did not have any noise issues. The mag's and the models all worked perfectly.

(Unfortunately, I managed to force the switch issue to occur on two occasions so decided to send it in for repair, when it came back I tested for the switch issue and it re-appeared within the first hour, even though the switch had been cleaned by Line6 - I contacted my dealer who offered me a JTV59-TSB as a replacement which I accepted - that had serial W1104 and unfortunately all the noise issues mentioned in my earlier post.)

The JTV59 should not have any noise issues when using the mags.  The only noise you should get should be the same noise you would get from using a standard guitar with humbuckers with your HD500 or X3L (ie: standard passive guitar background PU noise, which should be hardly noticable). So if you are getting noise when using mags via the VDI then I would recommend that you get it checked out as it probably needs to go back to Line6 for repair.

    Best Regards

    Eddie

Re: Please Post Your JTV Arrival Here

Afkasm – glad yours is OK – but afraid I spent  3 hours testing last night and I confirm my JTV-59 is definitely faulty and going back to Andertons today. To clarify serial number is W110400343 not W1104004343 as previously reported – please excuse typo!

Pick up selector works fine when using magnetic pickups as standard guitar – but doesn’t work at all for model selections in modelling mode. Guitar itself is very good as a standard guitar – but I already have a couple of nice ‘standard guitars’ which is not why I bought a variax! I guess I should consider myself lucky that this is a repeatable fault that is easy to demonstrate and which I can believe is due to faulty switch/wiring/solder/flux or whatever.

What is more worrying is that after some time playing in one model, the guitar started randomly switching modes on its own – I know this is widely reported existing issue but intermittent faults fill me with fear!! In fact I also found the guitar started randomly switching models on its own when connected to Workbench even when it was on a stand untouched!

Tried all sorts of things to check and fix...

    - Checked software updates. I was surprised to find that Workbench didn’t recognise the guitar until the analogue guitar lead was plugged into an amp. I’d plugged a lead into the guitar so it was ‘switched on’ and was getting 2 green lights on the interface supplied but PC couldn’t find guitar until I plugged other end into amp – so it appears the amp has some impact on things? So...

    - Tried connecting into 2 different amps and also into Line 6 UX1 USB interface

    - Tried both analogue and digital connections via POD XT

    - Removed & replaced battery

    - Tried all sorts of combinations of connecting and switching things in different sequence to change models etc etc.

Edstar & bobthedog – FYI I also experienced some noise when connected via the digital cable plugged into POD XT Live but didn’t investigate too much as was focussed on the switching. But I note the digital cable is unscreened so if using analogue signal through a bit of unscreened data cable in a noisy environment I wouldn’t be surprised to find some noise getting through.

Bottom line is nice guitar (full marks to Mr Tyler), build and finish was great, tuning modelling worked great  – just a shame it’s all unusable if models don’t work!

As a Line 6 fan I have to say that I’m both gutted and surprised that after so many months of delays to ‘fix’ such a well documented and publicised problem that they are still shipping products with this fault and I have lost quite a bit of confidence that they really are on top of this issue – especially when we see examples on this forum of people who are now on their 3rd or 4th replacements – afraid I don’t have that patience.

Having said that, it’s a great concept so if I can get one that works then I’m prepared to give them a second chance - so I await a replacement with both hope but some reservations.

So come on Line 6 – please restore the faith! Maybe extending the warranty beyond 12 months would go some way to restore some confidence – nobody spends over a £1000 on a guitar fearing it will only last a year.

Re: Please Post Your JTV Arrival Here

Sorry to hear that Mike.  Your serial number is not far off mine which is W110400366.  I hazard a guess that either they have had a bad batch of switches, or with the recent ramp up in production they have employed some new staff who are not yet skilled enough to successfully wire up the complex electronics of the JTV59.

I can also confirm that my first JTV serial W110100182 worked flawlessly and did not exhibit any noise issues for mags or models when using the VDI connected to my X3L - and that is how I expect they should all wrok. I only agreed to a replacement because I had forced the switch issue (the random switching variation) to appear twice on it, and as I feared when/if it may come back and/or get get worse, I opted to get it repaired, but when it came back from repair and the fault showed up within an hour of playing, I thought a replacement was the best bet. Unfortunately, in my case, the replacement was much worse electronically, having noise issues and the switch problem in all its flavours, the good thing was that actually it looked better and played better, only a bit but enough for me to feel happier with it. It's back with Line6 as we speak and I guess they will probably just replace all the electronic components rather than try to trouble shoot each issue.  As I have had one that was 99% OK, and I have heard reports from many on this forum that they have 100% OK examples, I am confident that Line6 can and will fix this for me, so I have the patience to at least review the outcome of this latest example.

As you say Mike, it is a great concept and when it works it is a fantastic instrument without any direct competition.  Hope you either get a fully working replacement or get your one repaired quickly.

    All the best!

    Eddie

Re: Please Post Your JTV Arrival Here

Thanks for feedback – but unfortunately its examples like yours which make me less confident – if Line 6 are really on top of the problem there should be no excuse for replacing a returned product with another which is still faulty.  When did yours go back for repair – what lead time is quoted for repair?
