One way to do it would be to record two separate tracks one with no fx and slightly less gain for definition and then the other track with fx .. one panned right like %80 the other left and then you can eq them ..put them in a stereo track or duplicate them make ones volume louder or softer in the mix .. etc.. until it sounds right to you.
Typically more gain means more mudd ... better two tracks with less gain for thick tight sound then one with too much fuzz or gain...

You, are an effing genius. thanks for the tip. this is what I made because of that. Well, and Maximus. the mix sucks, but at least you can hear the damn geetar!
