Which JTV should I replace my JTV-69 with?

I have decided to sell my JTV-69 Black. At first I gravitated toward the JTV-59 because of my history with Les Pauls, but now I'm concidering the JTV-89 because of the switch layout and the 2 octave neck. I need some feedback on both guitars. Please help me replace my Variax.

    Hi Kim,

    I have a JVT-89 and i would argue that it have the look and feel of a Ibanez RG series guitar. The neck is wider and flatter than a normal Gibson neck. The pups are also a bit "hotter" than the 59 (at least according to spec. maybe a 59 owner can chime in here). So I guess it is more dependent on what you plan to use it for. Sure the neck is 2 octaves but if you like the Gibson profile and feel comfortable with it you can always create a solo patch (in a x3 or hd) that retune thye guitar so that you have the full 2 octaves or even 2,5 (seriously how often do you solo above the fith frett ?). SO go with you feel, like the RG or LTD neck go for the 89 love your Gibson neck go with the 59.

    The two biggest advantages I see with the 89 would be 1.the $200 lower price and 2. you have a better chance of finding one in-stock. I love Ibanez RG necks, I find them the easiest to play of any neck style but I have been recording with a Les Paul recently and getting pretty used to it - the 59 neck has been described as closer to a PRS than a Les Paul...

     

    The 89 switching is preferable IMO though if you are using a VDI to select guitar models the switching advantage is moot.

     

    Many people will think of the 89 as a "metal" guitar, that bugs some people - I am not a metal guy though I do occasionally record metal bits and pieces, the metal appearance of the 89 does not really bother me, the 59 probably appeals more  to the more traditional minded guitarist.

     

    I would bet the 59 will hold more of its value if you decide to sell it later, it is a more classic and I believe universally appealing design.

     

     

    Honestly I wish there was a JTV with a big sexy 17" Gretsch style hollowbody and a Bigsby but til then the 89 holds the most appeal of the 3 JTVs and I will be buying one as soon as they are available with locking tremolo.

    Great points! I really care more about the bridge distance from the neck being shorter than the JTV-69 for muted playing, mostly jazz lines with a staccato feel. You are correct about the form factor, but I have a 1978 Ibanez PS-10 Paul Stanley that I have used on R&B and jazz recordings. It raised a few eyebrows in the studio but I got the tone I was looking for. LOL Thank You so much.

    Did you sell your 69 yet?
