Headphones for POD HD500

Hi,

I have a POD HD500. It's really great, but I bought a pair of Sony MDR-V6 for it and they don't really sound good with it.

I read later on the faq page, that you require the headphones to be 150-600 ohm.

Still, I want to be sure before I buy again that the headphones will be good.

Do you have any certain model of headphones that you liked that you can recommend me, in the range of $200 (more or less)?

I prefer open cans.

Will Beyer dt880/600 be good? It's 600 ohm so it's on your limit...

Thanks in advance:)

Yochay.

If you read the other long thread about this very same question you will see that you can use any headphones you like with it.

    The ohms don't actually matter.

For IEM style, Ultimate Ears Triple Fi isn't too bad.

I previously commented that the Audio Technica ATH-M50s was a really good set, but I would like to now add that I'm not sure if they're good for tweaking with.

The sound response is so different from my PA and UE headphones - not sure which one is reference!  The ATs sound really hifi, so when I play it back through other sources the patches sound dull because the ATs are so sparkly.

    Good luck with the search.

I use, and recommend the beyerdynamic 880s.  however i use the 250Ohms version  Are you going directly into the unit with the headphones?  or monitoring through something else first?

I found that the gain coming out of the 500s headphone jack was more than enough to drive the 250 ohm cans, but when i monitored through my looper (which i run post to the 500) i need to get a headphone amp to increate the gain to an appropriate level.  perhaps the 600 ohm version needs more power than the output of the 500 can handle?

Hey guys. Thanks for the great comments on this issue!

I'd love a pair of those 880's but can't justify spending the money on them. I'm looking in the $100 ballpark for a set on cans. More specifically, I've zeroed in on AKG K240 and Koss Pro4AAT. Does anyone have an opinion on these earphones? Or any others that would work for me. I'm trying to  put together and tweak HD500 tones at home as well as I can before taking them  to play in our church. Just bought the unit and plan to go straight to  PA/FOH since we use in ear monitors on stage.

            You should definitely get these:

            http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDR7506-Professional-Diaphragm-Headphone/dp/B000AJIF4E

When I bought my HD500 I tried a bunch of headphones but I always came back to these as I found they sound the same as the sound through my studio monitors and the same as through my Tech 21 Power Engine

They are also awesome for studio recording, the best I have found for vocal work.

              Thanks Johnny!

How do they sound with cab modeling and power amp modeling turned on?

I forgot to mention another headphone that I heard about in an audio forum... AudioTechnica ATH-M50.

Here is the frequency respones curve comparison.

                  Re: Headphones for POD HD500

                  I have these.

I use them as they're my only good set of cans.

I've heard some people say they're not great with the HD500, but to be honest, NO cans are...

You either think headphones with modelers are ok, or you don't.

If you don't like them, no set of cans is going to do it for you no matter how high end...

Seriously, just get any good set of studio cans and call it a day.

These are good for music too

And if you "don't like the way they sound" - try changing your patches

And if that doesn't work, spending $$$$$ on trying different cans that won't really make much of a difference isn't going to help

FWIW, I think they're fine, I don't think anything else would be "better"

I have other headphones I would say sound "better" (though less accurate) than the Sonys, I have some nice "HI-FI" sounding Sennheisers and AKGs that are great for non-critical listening but the best thing about the Sonys is my HD500 patches created on them translate perfectly from headphones to studio to my live rig - not true on the other phones.

Looking at those response curves posted above I would say the only phones mentioned here that are going to come close to the Sonys are the Beyers, the Beyers could be the best choice for those who have the $$$
