Tyler Variax USB Interface Not Recognized

I am trying to connect with Monkey and/or Workbench. It says no device connected. It IS connected. It won't let me update firmware, drivers, or anything. I have the newest (TODAY) versions of Monkey & Workbench. You spend this much money, you want the gear to freaking work.

Make sure that you have your battery charged and installed and plug in a 1/4" jack into the JTV. The Workbench / Variax / USB adapter does not power the guitar. You must run off battery.

  Th mosty important and not-at-all obvious thing is that you must have something plugged into both the 1/4" as well as the USB sockets, and the volume must be turned up to stop the guitar going to sleep.

    wow... that worked. Thanks ozbadman!
    All I did was plug a 1/4 cable into the Variax (the other end of the 1/4 isnt plugged into anything) and viola! I got two green lights on the USB hub.
