Anyone still feel the need for custom IR's since the DEP's came out??

NOT HERE!!
To me this may be the single most important update to the HD500 to date.
My hats off to Line 6 for this!!
It just made dialling in tones 100% easier, models that I was steering away from are now back on the table.
Now, I want to be careful with my praise, I don't want Line 6 to stop with the updates, updates are fun.
I just think it's worth recognizing and commending a great job.
Need, no.
Want, YES! ![]()
HAHAHA good answer Johnny!!
That sounds great!
That's the stuff I want to hear. When the 300 update is available, maybe I will finally be able to dial in a decent tone. I'm having a lot of equalization issues.
I definitely still want them. I tried to downsize some of my patches to use only one cab, but the cab DEP's aren't enough to get the sound both thick and crispy without sounding scooped.
now if they were to divide the amp and cab processing into different blocks so I could use one amp and 2 cabs and have much more DSP, that would be a different story.
Meambobbo is absolutely right. The trick is to reduce / save DSP resources. In the moment you need complete amp sims just for using different cabs and mics at the same time. Even the mics should be able to split fom the cabs.
But let me mention this: Every other ADDITIONAL feature may eat more DSP and reduce the number of effect blocks usable.
With the next POD HD generation (maybe already in two years?) for sure they will double the power and memory to build up and continue on the HD knowhow and integrate more features and sims. Let's say the mighty next HD 5000 will start with 32 amps and 16 effect blocks where you can seperately choose pre-amp, power-amp, cabs and mics and four serial / parallel paths.
Well Line 6 "solution" in the 1.40 firmware is to daisy chain different PODs using a S/PDIF and a MIDI cable, configuring one device to control effects on the second device or (in theory) you can have more amps, one on each unit. I think you could also, if you already have a POD like Xt, connect it and use it in the Fx Loop of the POD HD500, like a "normal" effect. Anyway, the idea to separate the cabs would be cool.
at one point i wanted to get a g major 2 for the expensive effects on the pod (reverb, smart harmony), and since it would likely sound better for mod effects that too. but some effects i want in front the amp. Since the g major has no loop, i would have to get 2 of them. i could compromise and use pod effects for pre-amp and g major for post, but then i'm still gonna hit dsp issues on the pod.
seems like I would need whammy pedal - wah pedal - pod for pre-amp effects - g major for post amp effects and some eq
not a huge rig, but still i can't justify buying a whammy pedal. i don't really use much effects either - i just want to always have reverb available. so for now the idea is shelved - i have more important purchases to make.
i don't think separating the mic and cab is possible if they are implemented the same way as everyone else makes IR's. Technically they are modeling a power amp in there too, but I'm sure they're using such a transparent one it doesn't really factor into the tone.
Stay in the mix and in the know.
