Whatever happened to...

At the risk of starting a forum for whining, which doesn't take much to achieve around here lately, I'd like to trigger some discussion to drive a few product enhancements into our beloved PODs and Edit software.

If you see something that I mention here that you'd like to see put back into the gear then make a request for it via the link provided.

 

Here goes...

 

 

Whatever happened to???

 

  • In the PODxt and PODxt Live you could adjust and set the default values on the amps and effects (via Line 6 Edit), this meant that when you called up any amp model or effect, it would load up with your favourite "go to" settings, not defaults determined by Line 6.

 

  • In the PODxt Live (Line 6 Edit) the EQs specified frequencies and db - not % for the settings on the device.

 

  • The Vetta II had a 6 band parametric EQ, whatever happened to those other two bands on the para EQ?

 

  • Line 6 Edit had a Jim Dandy graphical display of your parametric EQ curve, whatever happened to that?

 

  • Line 6 Edit included the ability to save templates for all your effects and amps so you can have your favourite tone settings for amps,stomps & effects all saved and named so that you could apply your templates to your effects and amps - this saves an enormous amount of time building patches because you can just grab and apply the pre-saved setting you need to any amp or effect.

 

  • Line 6 Edit let you export your patch names and locations into an HTML file that you can open and print so you have a quick reference guide to your patches - If you want to get clever you can copy the data into Excel and sort the patches alphabetically so you can quickly find a patch name and see its bank/channel location on the POD.  Now with so many patch locations, the need for this feature is greater than before.

 

What I'm trying to do here is to just add things that Line 6 have included before, not new things that would need to be built from scratch.  Is there anything that they have in other gear or used to do that you believe would make the gear better or easier to use?

 

If I have already lodged my feature requests.  If you think any of these are things that you'd use then let Line 6 know.

    you know.. it'd probably be super easy for them to at least make the versions of edit show the hz in the eq's even if it was unchanged on the pods themselves... for whatever reason they remain unchanged... cause i know this one has been requested probably over a million times.

      Yeah, it doesn't necessarily have to be built into the firmware, but it would be so handy in the editing software.  I really do miss the ability to save my own defaults and templates.  The templates were also done through Edit rather than the hardware, you'd just apply the template to the effect.  That's where I stored my FM compensator EQ.

        While we're talking EQs it would be nice if now that we have a bass amp model that we also had a bass EQ like the Bass PODxt had, but was not included in the XT's Bass Expansion. It's small details like this that are missing for me (like bass-specific compressors, OD etc.).

    Why can't I have amp models saved by type with my own settings too - like "Treadplate Crunch" and "Treadplate Lead" so all I do is select them everytime I want a new crunch or lead channel without having to spend ages trying to get the volumes right.

      That's what you could do with the templates in Line 6 Edit for the POD, Flextone, PODxt and Vetta II devices.  That capability was taken away with the Gearbox software.

       

      Submit a feature request to have that put into POD HDxxx Edit.

        People have suggested in the past that Line 6 create an API into the drivers, to allow aftermarket interfaces to be developed.   I cannot see a commercial drawback to this approach:  Line 6 could build their own 'basic' edit program and the community could develop more specialised views where required.   I view Line 6 as a software company at heart so I suspect that it in their power to deliver.

         

        I guess it would be a pain to get the API setup and maintained but I suspect it would be well received by the power users in the community (of which it seems there are an inordinate number of geeks ) and their views would filter out to the wider community as a positive.

    I think the lack of Hz and dB display in some of the EQ parameters is completely inexcusable. It looks like they intentionally dumbed down the parameters into a percentage, probably to make it supposedly "more accessible" to novices. Awful idea, if that was the case.

     

    That said, there will always be little ways in which you could make Edit more user-friendly and powerful. However, I think it is more important to focus on the (few) outright flaws, have those fixed, and then start talking about power user type tweaks. Right now the EQs are the biggest issue. We absolutely need Hz and dB, we need a 4-band parametric with graphical display, in fact there is really no reason why there shouldn't be a 15-band graphic EQ on the Pod HD. It doesn't sound like something that would really be DSP-intensive, it's just equalization. Ideally there should be the same graphical display for all the EQs, and for each EQ effect in your chain, you'd be able to manipulate the parameters and see the spectral profile change in real time. Even better if there would be an overall EQ display for each patch, that would show the stacked effect of all the EQs in your chain. Once again this is nothing amazingly difficult - older versions of Edit already had a lot of these features!

     

    Really the HD500 has been a fantastic upgrade from the Pod XT for me, but the "dumbed down" nature of the EQ effects just holds it back from greatness.

      As a career Studio Audio Engineer having used Protools from the SDII days up to v10, I find the way Line 6 does things relating to sound (POD500) and in their amps, Spiders and DT, (all of which I have) is like learning a new language. They break all the general rules of (professional audio) protocol with how they define things and how their gain structure works in some cases. It's a complete enigma to me why they went this route (until I started thinking about it differently)?  "Dumbed Down" is a good description but even so it is still confusing. I agree totally with this discussion on EQ's and Crusty's opening post. Also, just give us ONE PROPER Compressor/Limiter with all the controls of adjustment that are required and defined correctly .... PLEASE !!! .... and let's call it "The Crusher"  ... lol ! I would also ask the same for an EQ. I think many of us here would be quite happy to get those two issues delt with?

       

      I too have sent numerous feedback emails about this. Hopefully in the future they may make some changes? I guess, from looking at the model gallery, they decided to stick to how things were done in the past with respect to the various pedals and amps they are "modelling" and there in lies the answer. For example, NONE of the dynamics models follow conventional audio protocol with parameter definition and adjustment definition but neither do the originals and so that answer is clear. I understand it now. I have just picked up my guitar since retirement and had approached Line 6 from a different angle than how they approach things in design .... which confused the hell out of me.

       

      I am doing my best to work with what we are given, but man, talk about jumping though hoops UNTIL I redirected my thinking. This I had to do with the Spiders and especially the DT amp which confused me greatly until I did a handstand and looked at things differently. Crusty helped a lot with some of my DT rants.

       

      As for the Line 6 Editor ... well my blood pressure is already up so I won't go there .... lol !~!

       

      I have a "feeling" that Line 6 will not be providing many of the directions that are being asked for in this thread .... just my gut.

       

      Geeze, I think I am becoming a "Crusty old Sound Man" ... !!!!!

    The POD Xt had a "Clip" warning message. You didn't have to wonder if and when your signal was clipping...

    I also miss the Clip light. Other than that, here's how I deal with no longer being able to customize and save amp parameter; There are 8 setlists. I generally have 3 guitars I may use. I have default presets for each guitar in it's own setlist. I also will have one or 2 Performance setlists so I can line up whatever I need for a gig. When I need something new, I go to the setlist for That guitar, call up my default preset, make my tweaks, and save it where I need it.
