New 2.1 amp models and DT amps

Just curious: all the new amp models default to topology 1 when connected to a DT25 via L6 LINK. Is this correct, or was it an oversight? I've had a little trouble tweaking the new models and noticed this; I had expected them to default to 2 or 4, depending on the model. Of course, the Treadplate defaults to 3, which threw me at first too, but since switching it to 4 I've had no problems tweaking that one. Just curious which topology is accurate to which amp model, before I get really in depth with tweaking.

it would make sense that a DT update might need to happen so that the DT handles the new models properly... but they've not announced one, so who knows?

Really? I thought control of the DTxx topology was all done through midi signals, stored in the HDxxx patch (when using the L6 link). What do you think they would need to update in the DT?

I was rather hoping that I would never need to update the firmware in my DT25 :-)

you are correct... they are switched by midi... but these settings have to exist in the DT before switching would work correctly...

the topology settings are more or less presets, and there is more being switched internally (based on preamp selected when used with a pod hd) than what you can access from the front of a DT.

i've updated the DT many times, and it's relatively painless provided you have a good usb/midi cable.

          Thanks Zap.

Just curious ... if the pre-amp model on the HD changes some internal DT settings .... what happens when I change the topology to something different, manually with the amp controls? Do these 'internal' settings remain the same, or do they change to some sort of default configuration for the selected topology?

          Regards

my understanding is that changing the topologies would change to the presets associated with the preamp that normally resides in that topology settings... but admittedly, this is just my understanding and not a true confirmation.

Re: New 2.1 amp models and DT amps

The DT preamps are bypassed if an HD provides the amp modelling (pre or full) and you use L6 Link. Only if the HD patch does not select an amp model the preamp models in the DT come into play. As stated the HD default preamp settings include tone stack settings, cab, mic, ER,   ___AND___ a poweramp setting of class A/B, Type I voicing, pentode mode for all 3 Soldano models. Whether this default is a mistake or intention is really not that important as long as you like the outcome (tone) ... and everyone is invited (by explicit Line 6 manual instructions) to change the default should they like something else (as was discribed by a later poster). My point was that the DT preamps are not in the picture if you use any amp on the HD and connect to a DT with L6 Link.

You are correct as far as the pre-amp goes, but I think you missed the point. Zap was referring to 'internal' changes to the power amp in the DT that are determined by the pre-amp model selected on the HD (not the pre-amp model itself). These are configued in the DT firmware.

I wasn't aware of this either, until zap's post above, and I haven't seen it documented anywhere else. If I understand it right, there is more to the DT amps than the topology controls. The selected pre-amp also changes the power-amp configuration internally - presumably to sound closer to the power amp of the original, in addition to the topology controls.

I'm now looking for a good usb/midi cable to update the DT firmware :-)

Re: New 2.1 amp models and DT amps

The DT25 FW download is listed as Version 1.00, 9/28/11. I think this means it has not been updated after the last 2 HD updates that provided new amp models. Maybe there is more than is documented, but there seems to be no indication that the DT power amp section responds to more than the combination of 3 different voicing parameter configurations. Maybe Zap has more insight than he is able to share. I did not want to question his understanding of the sitation. Just thought there is potentially confusion on what the DT preamp do when used in combination with an HD (at least per Line 6 docs and my own experience).

wat sound/feels the best to you i guess.

i run the slo,s in top II now, maybe in top III tomorow thats the cool thing about the dt amps.

All I know is I was playing the Soldano model through my JTV->HD500->DT50 rig last night for the first time and was blown away at the sheer awesomeness of the tones I was getting!  My rig finally feels complete!

    Thanks Line 6!

the SLO is a great model no doubt.

most of the switching that i was alluding too probably only matters if using the PRE that would generally switch the power amp settings physically/internally... don't think that would be an issue using the full model... also have no idea if that's even applicable to what you were doing...

I don't think it would make it sound bad either way... just might not sound exactly the same after a possible DT update.

Re: New 2.1 amp models and DT amps

I got my HD500 updated over the weekend.  I didn't have a ton of time to play around with things, but I tried both the SLO Crunch and Overdrive and had some time to build a patch with the Overdrive with a vol, wah and I believe tube screamer out front.

Running this into my DT50.  I liked the SLO Overdrive immediately and then when I switched to Top III it was like holy @#!*  Really great sound and feel...lovin it.  I end up using Top IV for a lot of high gain patches as I typically find other Topologies don't have enough thump or get too bright and harsh.  Not with this model though.

Really dialed in an awesome tone quick with the SLO!
