    a question:

when you connect your variax by the VDI cable can you see the selected guitar model and its tone knob position in the system settings page 7/10?

if yes, and the "variax control" on page 7/10 is set to "preset", the only thing you can do and have to do is to save your current patch, and the current variax settings will be automatically saved along with your patch,.. if you find it convenient (I do not), while you are still on page 7/10 you can change the variax model and tone setting directly from there, and save the patch after..

when you'll recall the above patch your variax will change accordingly its settings

        I give you a hint:

go to the music store or to some your friend with your Variax and ask to try the HD500, connect everything, and see if there is still the same problem, if yes, of course the problem comes from your guitar, maybe from the VDI socket, sometimes some of the internal small and delicate pins are bad bent, maybe because by accident someone tried to insert the normal audio jack in the VDI socket..

I had a similar problem with a variax I bought some time ago, I tried the guitar and it was apparently everything ok but at that moment I didn't have any pod to try the VDI connection, only later I discovered that the VDI socket was screwed up and not working properly, so I ordered a new full VDI socket plate and in the mean time I bought also some small spare electronic parts to try to fix myself the problem (some soldering involved and not easy at all)..

and finally I succeded prior the arrival (two weeks) of the full VDI socket plate (very easy to mount), I still have the original replacement as a backup..

The guitar works perfectly both alone and connected to the HD

Unfortunately, it may happen that some people sell the Variax because they have made some hidden mess,...
for me it was in any case a good deal, for a 700 I paid much less than the second-hand market price
