Are you using a stereo amp?

Dec 28 2012 Hi! My question for this forum is are you using a stereo amplifier for your HD 500?

 

I've had my HD 500 for about 2 months now. I really like the quality of the effects, especially the stereo effects. I'm still learning tons about it. I originally bought the HD 500 to play through PA systems, but a lot of PA's are not run in true stereo; even if the mains are, the monitors very rarely are. I would like to have a nice stereo monitor at least.  I really like stereo effects and it does not make much sense to use an effects pedal of the HD 500 caliber into a mono amplifier. However, the only decent stereo amplifier I am able to find is the Roland KC 880. It seems really cool as I can sing through it too and has plenty of other channels, but that thing is really heavy at 100 lbs.. It seems like someone should start manufacturing some nice stereo guitar amps that are easier to carry around? There is the Roland BA 330, but I'm not sure that will be substantial enough?

My interface on this forum is completely switched up and does not allow me to reply ? Strange. Yes, those little PA's seem like a great idea. It would be even cooler to have one housed in a single cabinet space for ease of transport, but then I suppose you'd lose some of that great stereo spread. Stereo in ear monitors is a good idea, I'm just not sure I want to go that route yet; I'm kinda old school I guess. 
 
  I was not implying that anyone was being foolish by using their POD HD 500 into a mono amp. Sorry if it came across that way. I just think it's way better to use a stereo system for stereo FX. 
 
 I'll bet putting your band in stereo would make a huge difference live as mentioned.  
 
 It just seems like someone needs to manufacture a 100 watt solidstate amp with true stereo capabilities weighing around 50lbs. Two stereo channels would be even better; one for an instrument, the other for a vocal or second instrument. The idea being, I could have a nice stereo monitor for myself and have two direct outs (XLR) to send to the house PA system. This way even if the house is not in stereo I get stereo. Sometimes hearing myself in stereo makes me perform best, as it's just way more inspring with that depth there. The Roldand BA 330 is the closest I can find. The next option is the KC 880, which weighs too much for my taste. 
 
 Why can't I reply normally to this discussion I created? Weird. I've been trying to figure it out for days now. D'oh! PM me with a solution to this?

    You could get a couple of Kustom powered monitors and set them up in front of you.

    Yep, I run a Phonic Powerpod 820 into two Phonic S710s. Full stereo 8 channel powered mixer setup, sounds great. A little thin on the super low end, but for just home use or as stage monitors it's perfect. $300 new from GC.

    What puzzles me about your question is it seems imply (to me at least) that you want something for stage montioring use... which I am sure is a reasonable goal, but at the same time suggest many of the PA's you play through are mono. This in turn means you could spend a lot of time twaeking stereo patches which will be wasted at your gigs.

     

    That said I would have thought that there should be some stero ear monitors you could use for performing.

     

    As far as home use in concerned you have a lot of options - some of which have already been provided above. I use an amp and PA set-up (in stereo).

     

    Interesting you say "it does not make much sense to use an effects pedal of the HD 500 caliber into a mono amplifier." as although I do use the unit in stereo, I believe a great many gigging musicians here do use 'mono' live, so I would imagine it must make SOME sense ?

      I play through a pair of Mashall JCM900 amps/cabs and seperate them on both sides of the stage.  Playing in stereo makes a huge differance.  We also do vocals in stereo using a doubler, which is really just a tight delay setting.  People always come up to us and say how nice things sound, other musicians always ask how we get such a big tone and nice mix.  Going stereo is like going from 2d to 3d.  It's worth the effort and money.

       

      I think using the PODHD in mono is a waste of one of it's best features.

        This seems a fairer statement, as "not making sense" seems to imply those doing otherwise are making some sort of 'daft mistake'.

          I'm not implyng anything other than what I said.  This thread is about stereo amps and I think one of the best features about the PODHD is it's stereo capability.

            which isnt quite the same as saying:-

            If I did anything (pod related or not) and someone said what I was doing made no sense, I would strongly believe they where being critical of what I was doing (whether through a lack of understanding of what I was doing, or through an actual belief that it was wrong....... and I certainly dont see how it be interpreted as a supportive or constructive comment...

             

            Try it out. Go up to people and say "what you are doing makes no sense" .... and see if they turn around and say "thanks mate, thats really nice of you"!!!

             

            You are, however, quite correct that this thread is about stereo amps. So I hope the kind responants, be they fellow stereo amp users, or mono - what ARE they doing of  - amp people, have helped towards solving your situation.

    I use two Spider Valve 112 amplifiers on 212 cabs for my stereo setup with my HD desktop...

     

    I prefer the sound of a guitar amp over the PA sound of a mic on an amp...nothing wrong with that, just isn't my cup of joe...

    Gunpointmetal: the Kustom speakers are a great idea, especially since I already own them for my PA monitors. However, it would be nice to have something more convenient for transport.

     

    Astaroth_CY: that Phonic setup is cool. Thanks for the link. I was not aware that it existed. It'd be cool to somehow put those speakers into a single cabinet with that mixer on top to make it easier to transport. The speakers would be placed as far apart as possible in the cabinet to get as much stereo spread as possible. I wonder if anyone makes a cabinet already that would work with this mixer.

     

    joel_brown: That's awesome that you are doing the stereo thing with your performances! I knew I wasn't crazy to try and make this a reality for my performances too.

     

    To CairnsFella: I can see your point. It was a poor choice of words on my part. Let me rephrase my "it makes no sense to use an effects pedal of the HD 500 caliber into a mono amp" statement  to "I would prefer to use a stereo amp to get the most out of the stereo effects of the HD 500". You are right about the idea that this could be a waste of time as a lot of PAs I play through are mono (I find most clubs I play don't have a true stereo PA). As for the in ear monitors, that's a great suggestion, but I'm not sure I want to go that direction yet. Maybe that's what will be the most practical solution though. They are certainly convenient to transport ;-)

    It is I that should apologise, as I have attributed the initial statement incorrectly to yourself, so the confusion was mine.

     

    Still, I am happy that the OP retracted the original phrasing. The reality is the situation doesnt effct me, I just felt it was a little harsh for those who put time and effort into these forums, yet had their mode of use somewhat dismissed.

     

    Anyway, all is well now, and once more, happy new year.
